Chapter 1 - The Woman on the Marble Floor.

.The marble hallway should have felt familiar to Adrian Cole, but that night every polished surface seemed to reflect a life he no longer recognized.
He had entered Vivian Hart's mansion expecting another empty conversation about his missing wife.
Instead, he heard the scrape of a brush against stone.
At the far end of the corridor, a young woman knelt beside a metal bucket with her sleeves rolled to her elbows.
Her light brown hair was tied back in a loose knot.
Her shoulders trembled each time she reached toward the dark stain on the floor.
Adrian took one more step and stopped breathing.
The woman lifted her face.
Tears had left pale tracks beneath her eyes.
It was Helena.
For eight months, he had searched hospitals, hotels, train stations, private clinics, and every place connected to her old life.
For eight months, Vivian had sat across from him at dinners and charity meetings and told him she wished she knew where Helena had gone.
Now Helena was ten yards away, wearing a gray staff uniform.
"Helena."
The name left Adrian like a broken whisper.
The brush slipped from Helena's fingers.
Her mouth opened, but no sound came.
Then her gaze moved past him toward the grand staircase.
That single frightened glance told Adrian more than any explanation could have.
A heel clicked against marble above them.
Vivian appeared on the staircase in a deep red gown, one hand resting on the railing and the other holding a crystal glass of wine.
She did not look surprised.
She looked amused.
"She was here all along," Vivian said.
Adrian stared at her.
The shock inside him hardened into something colder.
He pulled out his phone.
Vivian's smile remained until she saw the name on his screen.
"Daniel," Adrian said when his financial director answered.
His eyes never left Vivian.
"Freeze every account Vivian controls."
The hallway became perfectly still.
Vivian's fingers loosened around the stem of her glass.
"Adrian, don't be ridiculous."
"Every account," he repeated.
The glass fell.
It struck the white marble steps and shattered in a bright spray of crystal.
Dark red wine ran downward like spilled paint.
Adrian crossed the hallway at once.
He dropped to his knees beside Helena and placed his jacket around her shoulders.
She flinched at first.
That tiny reaction hit him harder than anything Vivian could have said.
"It's me," he whispered.
Helena looked directly into his eyes.
"I thought you stopped looking."
Adrian's face tightened.
"Never."
He pulled her gently against his chest.
Behind them, Vivian hurried down two steps.
"You have no idea what she did," she said.
Adrian turned his head.
"Then explain why my wife is on your floor wearing a servant's uniform."
Vivian's expression flickered.
For the first time, panic broke through the elegance.
She looked toward the east wing of the mansion.
Helena felt Adrian notice it.
Her hand closed around his sleeve.
"Don't let her go upstairs," Helena whispered.
Adrian looked at her.
"Why?"
Helena swallowed hard.
"Because that's where she kept everything."
Before Adrian could ask what everything meant, a door slammed somewhere above them.
Footsteps raced behind the second-floor gallery.
Vivian went pale.
Adrian rose slowly, keeping one hand on Helena's shoulder.
The reunion he had imagined for eight months was over.

Whatever had happened inside this house was still happening.
And someone upstairs had just realized Helena was no longer alone.
