Chapter 4 - Helena's Eight Months.

.The ambulance crew examined Helena in a quiet sitting room away from Vivian.
They found exhaustion, dehydration, and signs of prolonged stress, but no immediate medical emergency.
Helena asked to remain with Adrian for the night.
Adrian sat across from her while the medical team finished their notes.
He wanted to ask a hundred questions.
He forced himself to ask only one.
"What do you need from me right now?"
Helena looked surprised by the question.
"I need you to believe me before she talks you out of it."
Adrian moved closer.
"She cannot do that anymore."
Helena closed her eyes.
For months, Vivian had repeated the same story to her.
Adrian was ashamed of her.
Adrian had replaced her.
Adrian had paid to keep her away.
Whenever Helena questioned those claims, Vivian produced another message, another document, or another person willing to repeat the lie.
At first, Helena stayed in a guest suite.
Then Vivian said Helena owed the household for food and lodging.
A contract appeared.
Helena refused to sign it.
The next day, she was told that Adrian had frozen her personal accounts as part of the separation.
She began working in the mansion because she believed she had nowhere else to go.
"Why didn't you run?" Adrian asked softly.
Helena looked toward the hallway.
"I did."
She described leaving before sunrise one morning and reaching the main gate.
The guard told her Adrian had obtained a protective order and that approaching him could get her arrested.
The warning terrified her enough to turn back.
Later, Vivian showed her a printed court notice.
Claire asked to see it.
Helena said it was kept in the east wing file room.
Claire returned upstairs with security and found a copy within minutes.
The notice looked official at first glance.
Its case number, however, belonged to an unrelated property dispute.
Claire came back with controlled anger in her eyes.
"There was no order against you."
Helena covered her mouth.
Adrian looked away because the pain on her face was difficult to watch.
She had spent eight months obeying a document that never legally existed.
Vivian appeared in the doorway again.
"She could have checked."
Adrian stood.
"With what phone?"
Vivian said nothing.
"With what money?"
Still nothing.
"With what transportation?"
Vivian's expression sharpened.
"Do not pretend you were a perfect husband."
Adrian did not defend himself.
"I was not."
Helena looked at him.
He continued.
"I worked too much."
"I ignored warning signs."
"I trusted people because it was convenient."
"But I never abandoned my wife."
The admission changed something in Helena's face.
She was still hurt, but she no longer looked completely alone.
Claire received a call from Adrian's financial director.
The freeze had worked.
Several attempted transfers had already been blocked.
One request had come less than ten minutes after Adrian's call.
The destination was an offshore holding company.
Claire asked who initiated it.
The answer made her go quiet.
"Owen Price," she said.
Adrian glanced toward the east wing.
Owen had claimed he was only a document consultant.
Now he had tried to move money while everyone was inside the mansion.
Security went upstairs to find him.
The records room was empty.
The side exit stood open.
On the desk, beneath Helena's forged separation agreement, someone had left a single black flash drive.
A paper label was taped to it.
