Chapter 14 - The Offer.

.Helena read Vivian's proposed statement twice.

Then she placed it on the table.

"No."

Adrian did not try to influence her.

Claire asked whether Helena wanted to negotiate any part of the offer.

"The money can be negotiated by people who own it."

"My truth is not for sale."

The meeting took place in Claire's office rather than at the mansion.

Vivian arrived in a pale suit with no jewelry and no visible sign of panic.

Her attorney carried three folders.

Vivian looked at Helena first.

"You could end this today."

Helena sat across from her.

"You could have ended it eight months ago."

Vivian ignored the remark and explained the proposal.

She would transfer control of Meridian's debt positions to an independent trustee.

She would return disputed Northbridge funds subject to accounting.

She would resign from every family-controlled entity.

In exchange, Adrian and Helena would agree that the mansion arrangement had been private and voluntary.

Adrian leaned back.

"You want the money problem separated from what you did to Helena."

Vivian's expression remained smooth.

"I want everyone to stop pretending Helena had no choices."

Helena looked directly at her.

"You took my phone."

Vivian said Owen did that.

"You canceled my transportation."

Vivian said staff made mistakes.

"You showed me false messages from my husband."

Vivian said Owen created them.

"You told the gate I could not leave to see Adrian."

Vivian paused.

"I told them to protect everyone from a scene."

Helena's voice stayed calm.

"You told me he did not want me."

For the first time, Vivian looked away.

That was the answer Helena had needed.

Not an apology.

Not even an admission.

Just the moment Vivian could no longer look her in the eye while repeating the lie.

Claire closed the settlement folder.

"There will be no false statement."

Vivian's attorney asked for a recess.

Vivian refused.

She turned toward Adrian.

"You think she will forgive you because you found her?"

Adrian's face did not change.

"This is not about whether she forgives me."

"Of course it is."

"No."

He looked at Helena before continuing.

"She gets to decide what happens to our marriage."

Vivian stared at him as though the idea offended her.

Control had always been her language.

A choice she could not influence looked like defeat.

Vivian stood.

"Then you both deserve what happens next."

Claire asked what she meant.

Vivian said nothing and left with her attorney.

Ten minutes later, Meridian issued notices demanding immediate payment on several disputed loans.

The timing was obvious.

But the audit team was ready.

They filed emergency challenges based on evidence that the loans were funded with improperly diverted assets.

A judge issued a temporary order preserving the status quo until ownership could be reviewed.

The company survived the day.

That evening, Helena returned to the mansion once more with investigators to collect personal belongings from the room where she had stayed.

Adrian waited outside because Helena asked to enter without him.

Inside a drawer beneath folded uniforms, Helena found a small envelope in her own handwriting.

She had forgotten it existed.

It was addressed to Adrian.

She had written it during her second month in the mansion and hidden it before Vivian could search the room.

Helena opened the envelope.

The first line made her sit down.

Adrian, if you ever find this, please know that I never stopped trying to come home.
