Chapter 8 - The Brother Who Had a Key.

.Adrian had trusted Nathan with almost everything.
They had survived their father's sudden death together.
They had rebuilt the family company together.
Nathan had stood beside Adrian at his wedding to Helena.
Now his name sat on the access log beside an attempted transfer connected to Northbridge.
Adrian called him immediately.
Nathan answered on the fourth ring.
"Where are you?"
"At the office."
"Why?"
There was a pause.
"Vivian called me."
Adrian's grip tightened around the phone.
"What did she say?"
"She said you were having some kind of breakdown at her house."
Helena closed her eyes.
The pattern was painfully familiar.
Nathan continued.
Vivian had told him Adrian was freezing legitimate accounts and jeopardizing payroll.
She asked him to use emergency authorization to release a transfer.
Nathan admitted he had tried.
"Did you know where Helena was?" Adrian asked.
The silence was worse than an answer.
"Nathan."
"I knew she was staying with Vivian."
Adrian felt the room tilt.
Helena turned toward him.
"For how long?"
Nathan's voice dropped.
"Since the beginning."
Adrian walked away from everyone and stared through the library windows.
"You knew my wife was there while I was searching for her?"
"Vivian told me Helena did not want to see you."
"Did Helena tell you that?"
"No."
"Did you ever ask her?"
Nathan had no answer.
Adrian ended the call before anger could make the conversation useless.
Helena remained silent.
That hurt more than accusation would have.
"Say it," Adrian told her.
"I don't know what to say."
"You have every right to be angry."
Helena looked down at her hands.
"I am tired of being angry at people who believed Vivian instead of asking me."
The sentence landed heavily.
Adrian realized that Nathan's betrayal was not dramatic.
It was worse.
It was ordinary cowardice.
Nathan had accepted the easier version of events because it protected his comfort.
Claire instructed the financial director to revoke Nathan's emergency authority until the attempted transfer could be investigated.
Then she asked Nathan to come to the mansion voluntarily.
He arrived an hour later looking shaken.
When he saw Helena, he stopped in the entry hall.
"Helena, I thought—"
"You thought what she told you to think," Helena said.
Nathan lowered his eyes.
He handed Claire his phone.
Vivian's messages were still there.
One was particularly important.
If Adrian discovers the old foundation files, remind him what Arthur did.
Claire showed it to Adrian.
"What did our father do?" Nathan asked.
Adrian did not know.
Vivian answered from the staircase.
"He stole from Northbridge."
Everyone turned.
Vivian wore a cream suit now, her face calm again.
"Arthur moved money for years."
"I protected this family from the scandal."
Nathan stared at her.
"Then why change the ledger to Adrian's initials?"
Vivian's expression hardened.
"Because sometimes the next generation has to carry the debts of the last."
Helena stepped forward.
"That is not an answer."
Vivian looked at her with open contempt.
"You were never supposed to understand the answer."
Claire's phone buzzed.
The forensic accountant had found a surviving bank archive for the Harbor account mentioned in Arthur's note.
The account had not been controlled by Arthur.
May you like
It had been opened under Vivian's maiden name.
And one transfer from that account, dated six years earlier, had been made on the same day Adrian's father died.
