Chapter 2 - The East Wing Door.

.Adrian told the house staff to stay where they were while he helped Helena to her feet.
She moved carefully, as if she had learned that every sudden motion might bring unwanted attention.
Vivian recovered enough to lift her chin.
"You cannot storm through my home because she is telling stories."
Adrian did not raise his voice.
"You told me you had not seen her in months."
"I was protecting you."
Helena gave a small, disbelieving laugh that carried no humor.
Adrian looked at her.
"From what?"
Vivian stepped between them and the staircase.
"From a woman who was unstable and embarrassed."
Helena's eyes filled again, but she did not look away.
"You told everyone I left him."
"You did leave," Vivian said.
"After you took my phone and canceled the car."
Vivian's jaw tightened.
Adrian watched both women closely.
He had spent months accepting fragments because grief had made him desperate for any explanation that sounded possible.
Now those fragments were becoming a pattern.
He called security from his office building and asked them to come to the mansion.
Then he called his attorney, Claire Morgan.
"I need you here tonight," he said.
"Do not tell anyone why."
Vivian's composure cracked another inch.
"You are turning a family misunderstanding into a spectacle."
Adrian looked toward the shattered glass on the staircase.
"You made it a spectacle when you hid my wife in plain sight."
Helena whispered that the east wing had a locked room at the end of the upper hall.
She said Vivian had forbidden every member of staff from entering it.
She also said she had heard printers running late at night and had once seen boxes with Adrian's company seal carried inside.
Adrian's pulse changed.
His company seal was not supposed to exist anywhere outside his corporate records office.
He helped Helena sit on a velvet bench near the entry hall.
"Can you stay here while I check the room?"
Her fingers caught his wrist.
"Do not go alone."
The fear in her face stopped him.
Adrian nodded and waited for his security team.
Vivian paced once toward the library.
Adrian blocked her path.
"Where are you going?"
"To call my lawyer."
"Use your phone here."
"You do not control me."
"Not anymore."
Vivian stared at him with open anger.
Then the front doors opened.
Two security officers entered, followed minutes later by Claire Morgan in a dark coat and practical shoes.
Claire took one look at Helena and immediately understood that this was not a routine dispute.
She asked Helena whether she wanted medical care.
Helena nodded.
An ambulance was called, but Helena refused to leave before she showed Adrian the east wing.
They moved upstairs together.
Vivian followed at a distance, protesting that they had no right to search private rooms.
At the end of the hall stood a dark mahogany door with a brass keypad.
Helena pointed to it.
"That one."
Claire asked whether Helena knew the code.
"It changed every Friday."
Adrian stepped closer.
A tiny green light blinked above the handle.
Then something clicked from inside.
The door opened three inches.
Everyone froze.
A young man in a black suit appeared in the gap.
He saw Adrian and immediately tried to close it.
One of the security officers stopped the door with his foot.
The young man backed away.
Adrian entered after Claire warned everyone not to touch anything.
The room looked like a private records office.
There were file cabinets, printers, security monitors, and stacks of folders.
One folder lay open on the desk.
Adrian saw Helena's name on the first page.

Beneath it was a signature that looked exactly like his.
He knew at once that he had never signed it.
