Chapter 10: Safe Haven

The night air was refreshingly cool as Vivian stepped out of the stifling country club and into the quiet evening. A fleet of sleek, black SUVs idled at the curb.

Arthur gently guided her into the plush leather backseat of the lead vehicle, sliding in next to her. The door clicked shut, sealing them inside a quiet, soundproof sanctuary. As the convoy pulled away, leaving the disastrous wedding reception far behind, the adrenaline that had kept Vivian standing finally began to fade.

She slumped against the leather seat, the exhaustion settling deep into her bones. A single tear slipped down her cheek—not out of sadness for losing Julian, but from the overwhelming relief of finally being safe.

Arthur reached over, taking her hand in his warm, calloused grip. "I'm so sorry, Viv. I never should have let you go to these people."

"You couldn't have known, Dad. I didn't even know," Vivian whispered, resting her head on his shoulder. "I thought he loved me. But the moment his status was threatened, I became disposable."

"You are a Vance," Arthur said fiercely, though his eyes were completely gentle. "You are never disposable. And neither is my grandchild."

Vivian rested a hand on her belly. The baby fluttered softly, as if sensing the calm that had finally washed over its mother. For the first time in months, Vivian didn't feel the weight of trying to fit into a world that looked down on her. She was going back to the sprawling green hills of the upstate estate, back to a place of genuine love and quiet strength.

"Thank you for coming," she murmured, closing her eyes as the city lights blurred past the tinted windows.

"Always," Arthur replied, kissing the top of her head. "Now, let's get you home."
