Chapter 12: The Gatecrasher

Three days later, the reality of Arthur Vance’s promise hit the Mercer family with the force of a freight train.
Vivian was sitting on the wrap-around porch, reading a book, when the estate’s head of security, Marcus, approached with a quiet, respectful heavy tread.
"Miss Vivian," Marcus said, keeping his voice low. "Julian Mercer is at the main gate. He’s... quite frantic. He’s demanding to speak with you."
Vivian closed her book, her heart giving a dull thud. She looked toward the long, winding driveway. The main gates were over a mile away, out of sight, but the thought of Julian’s desperate energy invading her sanctuary made her stomach turn.
Arthur stepped out onto the porch, having heard the exchange through the open study window. He looked at Marcus. "Is he on the property?"
"No, sir. He's outside the perimeter gate. He claims his mother’s firm lost three major contracts this morning and he needs to apologize to Vivian to stop the bleeding."
Vivian shook her head, feeling a wave of pity mixed with disgust. Even now, Julian wasn't here because he missed her or loved her. He was here because his wallet was hurting.
"Tell the gate guards to turn him away," Vivian said firmly, looking up at Marcus. "If he refuses to leave, call the local authorities for trespassing. I have absolutely nothing to say to him."

Marcus nodded respectfully. "Right away, ma'am."
Arthur placed a proud, reassuring hand on her shoulder as they watched Marcus walk away. The chapter with Julian was permanently closed.
