Chapter 3: It's Time

While Vivian stood paralyzed, Sarah eagerly grabbed Vivian's clutch from the nearby table, rummaging through it just out of frame. The sound of Vivian’s personal belongings being dumped onto a silver tray was deafening.

"It's not in here," Sarah muttered, looking up with a frustrated sneer. She eyed Vivian with blatant disgust. "She must have hid it somewhere else."

As the words hung in the air, something inside Vivian snapped. The trembling stopped. The fear that had gripped her chest melted away, replaced by an icy, fierce protective instinct. She wasn't just a woman being humiliated; she was a mother, and the stress they were putting her through was entirely unacceptable.

Breathing heavily but slowly regaining her composure, Vivian ignored Julian’s outstretched hand. She reached into the pile of her dumped belongings and retrieved her smartphone, its light-blue case catching the chandelier's light.

"What now? Call the police on yourself?" Eleanor mocked, crossing her arms.

Vivian stared dead into the older woman's eyes, her face hardening into stone. "No. I’m calling my family."

Julian’s eyes widened slightly. He knew Vivian came from a quiet family, but he had never bothered to learn much about them, always assuming they were beneath his social circle.

Vivian dialed the number she had sworn she would only use in an absolute emergency. She held the phone to her ear. The room watched her in tense silence. Tears of betrayal welled in her eyes, but her jaw was set with unshakeable resolve.

The line clicked open.

"Dad," Vivian whispered, her voice carrying a deep, emotional weight that filled the silent diner. "It's time."

A deep, calm voice echoed through the earpiece. “Stay exactly where you are, sweetheart. We are already on our way.”
