Chapter 19: The Grandfather

Back at the upstate estate, the transition from corporate titan to doting grandfather was complete. Arthur Vance, a man whose mere gaze used to make Wall Street executives sweat, was currently sitting on the floor of the grand library, intensely focused on building a towering structure out of wooden blocks.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Leo, a miniature version of Vivian with a head of unruly dark curls and sharp, observant eyes, toddled over. With a mischievous giggle, Leo kicked the blocks, sending them clattering across the expensive Persian rug.

Instead of being annoyed, Arthur let out a booming laugh, scooping the toddler up and tossing him gently into the air. "A demolition expert! Just like your grandfather, tearing down structures to build something better."

Vivian watched them from the doorway, leaning against the rich oak frame with a mug of tea in her hands. Her heart swelled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Julian and Eleanor had tried to convince her that she was a liability, that her background was a weakness. They were so blinded by their pursuit of status that they completely missed the true meaning of wealth.

Wealth wasn't the chandelier-lit hall or the champagne sequin dresses. Wealth was the sound of her son's uninhibited laughter. It was the absolute certainty that if she fell, her father would catch her. It was the peace of mind knowing Leo would never have to question his worth or earn his family's love.

"Alright, you two," Vivian called out, stepping into the room. "Time to wash up for dinner. Maria made roast chicken."

Leo immediately wriggled out of Arthur's arms and ran to Vivian, wrapping his tiny arms around her legs. Arthur stood up, his joints popping slightly, but his eyes were bright and full of life.
