He finally admitted Richard had pressured him to accept responsibility for a moment of "reckless confusion" in exchange for the family's lawyers controlling the narrative.
Richard believed a young man's impulsive mistake would be easier to contain than a coordinated financial scheme linking Calder and Maddox Development.
Cole had agreed because he was terrified of losing everything attached to his father's name.
Then he changed his mind after hearing Emily had awakened.
"She looked at me in the garage," he told Price.
"She knew I was scared, and she still told me to call for help."
That sentence mattered to Gabe more than he expected.
Emily had been injured and still understood which person might choose differently.
Cole handed over his cloud account and gave investigators access to messages from Friday night.
One thread was titled simply FAMILY.
Richard had sent three words at 11:17 p.m.
SAY YOU FOUND HER.
Julian had sent another message seconds later.
NO ONE MENTIONS ELEVATOR.
Price now had direct evidence of a coordinated false account.
But the necklace remained missing.
Then Lena found something everyone else had overlooked.
The pendant model did not store recordings only on the device.
If paired with a phone, it uploaded encrypted audio whenever it reached a trusted wireless network.
Emily's phone had connected automatically to Calder's employee Wi-Fi while she was in the elevator.
The recording might have been uploaded before anyone took her phone.
The problem was accessing the account without damaging the evidence trail.
Price obtained the proper digital authorization and brought in a forensic technician.
At 6:42 p.m., a file appeared on the screen.
Duration: twelve minutes, eleven seconds.
Created Friday at 10:40 p.m.
Emily listened from her hospital bed while Gabe, Price, Lena, and a prosecutor named Sarah Chen stood nearby.
The recording began with elevator music.
Then Cole's voice.
"Emily, just give him the envelope."
Emily answered clearly.
"No."
Mason spoke next.
"You're making this bigger than it is."
Then Arthur.
"Everyone stop."
A new voice entered as the elevator doors opened.
Julian.
"You should have taken the offer."
Emily's voice remained steady.
"You mean the money?"
"I mean the chance to walk away."
There was movement, a sharp scrape, and several people speaking at once.
Emily said, "Get your hand off the envelope."
Arthur shouted, "Julian, stop."
Then came a sound like a door striking metal.
Emily gasped.
Cole yelled her name.
Footsteps followed.
The recorder continued capturing voices from somewhere nearby.
Julian spoke first.
"Nobody says I touched her."
Cole shouted back.
"Call an ambulance."
Richard's voice was not on the recording because he had not been in the garage.
But seconds later, Julian made a phone call on speaker.
"Dad, we have a problem."
Richard's voice came faintly through the line.
"Then control it."
The room around Emily became completely silent.
Gabe looked at her.
Tears filled her eyes, but her voice remained calm.
"Keep playing."
Near the end, the recorder captured one final exchange.
Arthur said, "I'm done covering for you."
Julian answered, "Then you're next."
The file ended.
Prosecutor Sarah Chen closed her notebook.
"This isn't just an accident investigation anymore."
Price nodded.
Gabe looked toward Emily.
She had survived long enough to make the truth speak for itself.
