Chapter 8 - The Fourth Shadow.

Lena found the missing son in an obituary.

Richard Maddox's first wife had died seventeen years earlier, and the obituary listed two children.

Cole Maddox was the younger.

The older was Julian Maddox, then nineteen years old.

After that year, Julian almost vanished from public records.

No social media.

No corporate biography.

No photographs on the Maddox family website.

But he had not disappeared.

He had simply stopped using his father's name.

Three years after his mother's death, Julian legally changed his surname to Vale.

Julian Vale was now thirty-six and served as operations director for Calder Foundation.

Gabe stared at Lena's screen.

"Emily worked with him every day."

"Apparently."

"Why hide the connection?"

Lena opened another document.

"Because Julian's mother left him voting shares in a holding company that owns fourteen percent of Maddox Development."

If the redevelopment deal succeeded, Julian stood to make millions.

If Calder's financial misconduct became public, the deal could collapse under regulatory review.

Detective Price arrived with a warrant request already in progress.

"Julian is now a person we need to locate."

Gabe's eyes moved to Emily's bed.

"He knows she's alive."

"So do half the people in this building."

That answer became important two hours later.

A hospital orderly entered Emily's room pushing a linen cart.

Gabe had seen dozens of staff members come and go, but something about the man felt wrong.

His badge was turned backward.

His shoes were polished leather, not hospital work shoes.

And he did not look at the patient chart before reaching for the IV stand.

Gabe stood immediately.

"What are you doing?"

The man stopped.

"Changing the line."

Dana, passing the doorway, heard him.

"No one ordered a line change."

The stranger backed away.

Gabe moved between him and Emily without touching him.

"Turn your badge around."

The man's eyes darted toward the hall.

Then he abandoned the cart and ran.

Hospital security intercepted him near the stairwell before Gabe could follow.

Price arrived minutes later.

The man carried no weapon and no medication, but his borrowed badge belonged to an employee on vacation.

Inside the linen cart, officers found a small digital recorder and a wireless camera.

Someone had sent him to listen.

During questioning, the man gave his name as Owen Pike and claimed a private investigator paid him five hundred dollars to place the recorder in Emily's room.

"Which investigator?" Price asked.

Owen gave a name.

Lena searched it immediately.

The investigator's company had received monthly payments from Calder Foundation's operations budget.

Authorized by Julian Vale.

Gabe felt fury rise again, but he forced it down.

Evidence mattered more than anger.

Then Owen said something that changed the direction once more.

"I wasn't told to hurt anybody."

Price stared at him.

"Nobody said you were."

Owen realized his mistake.

"I mean, I just put cameras places."

"Places?"

He looked toward his attorney.

Too late.

Price leaned forward.

"Where else?"

Owen closed his mouth.

Lena's phone vibrated.

She looked at the message, then at Gabe.

"Emily's apartment alarm was disabled twenty minutes ago."

Gabe was already moving toward the door.

Price caught his arm.

"You are not going there alone."

Gabe looked at Emily through the glass.

Someone had watched her at work.

May you like

Someone had watched her in the hospital.

And now someone was inside her home.
