Chapter 13 - The Hearing.
Richard Maddox stood behind a polished podium less than two hours after investigators recovered Emily's recording.
He looked calm, concerned, and almost paternal beneath the television lights.
He told reporters his family was devastated by Emily's injuries.
He described the garage incident as a tragic misunderstanding involving frightened young people.
He announced that Maddox Development would cooperate fully with authorities.
Then he did exactly what Gabe expected.
He attacked Emily without sounding like he was attacking her.
Richard referred to "confused accusations" made by an employee under professional stress.
He warned against allowing "incomplete documents" to damage charitable institutions serving thousands of families.
Gabe watched the press conference from Emily's room.
His jaw tightened with every carefully chosen word.
Emily watched too.
She did not look angry.
She looked disappointed.
"He thinks people will believe the suit," she said.
Gabe glanced at her.
"People believe evidence longer."
The next morning, Calder's emergency board hearing began under pressure from donors, regulators, and city officials.
Emily could not attend in person, but Sarah Chen arranged for her to provide a limited remote statement after her physicians approved it.
Richard's attorneys tried to delay the hearing.
The board refused.
Arthur Bell appeared first.
He admitted approving improper transfers and explained how Julian directed operational accounts while Richard's network applied pressure through outside consultants.
Victor Hale testified under immunity about removing Emily's phone from hospital property at Cole's request after receiving instructions from Julian.
Cole admitted lying in his original statement and described Richard's demand that everyone say they found Emily after the fall.
Mason and Tyler, suddenly without family lawyers coordinating their stories, confirmed most of Cole's account.
Then Emily appeared on the screen.
Her neck brace was still visible.
Her voice was quiet.
Nobody in the room interrupted her.
"I did not begin looking at these payments because I wanted to destroy Calder."
She paused.
"I looked because Calder promised donors that money would reach people who needed it."
Richard stared at the table.
Emily continued.
"When I asked questions, I was offered a promotion."
"When I refused, I was warned about my future."
"When I kept copies, people followed me."
"And when I finally tried to turn over the original records, I ended up in a hospital bed."
The room stayed silent.
Sarah introduced the ledger, transaction maps, property-room footage, messages, and finally the recovered audio.
Richard's attorney objected repeatedly.
The board chair overruled him repeatedly.
Then came the recording.
Julian's voice filled the room.
"You should have taken the offer."
Richard's face changed for the first time.
When his own voice appeared later saying, "Then control it," he closed his eyes.
The board voted unanimously to suspend every executive connected to the transactions and refer the full record to state and federal investigators.
The Maddox redevelopment agreement was frozen pending review.
Outside the hearing room, cameras crowded the hallway.
Gabe thought it was over.
Then Sarah approached him with a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was Emily's silver necklace.
"Where did you find it?" he asked.
"We didn't."
Gabe frowned.
Sarah's expression hardened.
"Someone mailed it to the prosecutor's office this morning."
Inside the package was a note.
