Chapter 6 - A Door Left Open.
Emily's words changed everything because they did not clear Cole.
They simply moved him one step away from the center.
Gabe remained beside her while Dana checked the monitors and called the attending physician.
Emily did not wake again.
The doctor explained that brief responses could happen during recovery and warned Gabe not to push her if she became conscious.
He agreed because protecting Emily mattered more than satisfying his questions.
But the words stayed in his head.
The man behind him.
Arthur Bell had stood behind Cole in the elevator.
At least, someone carrying Arthur's silver-tipped cane had.
By 9:00 a.m., Lena had found a clearer answer.
A traffic camera three blocks from Calder showed Arthur's black sedan entering the garage at 10:16 Friday night.
Another camera showed it leaving at 11:28.
Arthur had been there during the entire missing window.
Gabe called Detective Naomi Price, the officer assigned to Emily's case.
Price arrived forty minutes later with tired eyes and a notebook full of questions.
She did not like that Gabe had gathered evidence outside official channels.
He did not like that her department had accepted Cole's story so quickly.
They compromised by being equally suspicious of each other.
Gabe showed her Emily's voicemail, the property-room video, the recovered elevator thumbnail, and his recording of Cole.
Price listened without interrupting.
Then she closed her notebook.
"This changes the case."
"It should have been a case from the start."
"It was listed as an accidental fall because that was the evidence available."
"Evidence provided by the people standing next to her."
Price met his stare.
"Which is why I'm here now."
Gabe respected the answer even if he did not like it.
She immediately requested preservation orders for the hospital footage and Calder's digital systems.
Then she asked the question Gabe had been avoiding.
"Why would Arthur Bell risk all of this?"
Lena answered from the speakerphone.
"Money."
She had traced more than two million dollars through the shell vendors in Emily's folder.
Some payments eventually reached a consulting company controlled by Arthur's brother-in-law.
Others appeared tied to parcels needed for the Maddox redevelopment project.
Price frowned.
"That's motive for fraud, not necessarily for what happened to Emily."
"Then we find the bridge," Gabe said.
The bridge arrived thirty minutes later.
Harold from hospital security called Gabe downstairs.
Victor Hale had returned to the property room and demanded access to the surveillance system.
Harold refused and notified Detective Price.
By the time they reached the basement, Victor was standing outside the locked security office with his face flushed.
"This is an internal hospital matter," he snapped.
Price displayed her badge.
"Not anymore."
Victor's expression shifted when he saw Gabe.
"You have no right to be down here."
Gabe said nothing.
Price asked Victor why he entered Emily's property room with Cole Maddox.
Victor claimed Cole had identified himself as Emily's friend and said her family wanted the phone.
"Did you verify that with her family?" Price asked.
Victor looked at Gabe.
"No."
"Did you document the removal?"
"The property was signed out."
"The phone never came back."
Victor's confidence faded.
Then the basement door opened behind them.
Daniel Kessler, the Maddox attorney, stepped inside.
"Victor, don't answer another question."
Price's eyes narrowed.
"How did you know he was being questioned?"
Kessler paused.
No one had called him.
No one in the room had announced what was happening.
Victor looked toward his pocket.
Price noticed.
She held out her hand.
"Phone."
Victor did not move.
A soft electronic voice suddenly sounded from inside his coat.

Someone had been listening the entire time.
