Chapter 2 - Laughter Behind Glass.

Gabe did not touch the note with his bare hands.

Years of working security for corporate clients had taught him that panic destroyed more evidence than criminals ever did.

He asked the nurse for an empty specimen bag, sealed the note inside, and photographed it from both sides.

The nurse introduced herself as Dana Brooks.

She kept glancing toward the hallway as if the walls had learned to listen.

"What garage?" Gabe asked.

Dana hesitated.

"The parking structure behind the Calder Foundation offices."

Emily worked for Calder as a financial compliance analyst.

Her job was boring by design, which was exactly why Gabe had never understood the fear in her last call.

She audited grant payments, vendor invoices, and property transfers.

Nobody was supposed to end up in a trauma ward over spreadsheets.

Dana folded her arms.

"The report says she fell down a service stairwell."

"Do you believe that?"

Dana looked directly at him.

"No."

Gabe felt his anger return, but this time it was colder.

Dana explained that the paramedics had found Emily near Level Four of the garage shortly after eleven on Friday night.

Cole Maddox had told police he and his friends discovered her while leaving a nearby restaurant.

The story sounded neat.

Too neat.

Gabe called Lena again.

"Find the garage cameras."

"Already looking."

"And the police report."

"Working on it."

"And find out why the son of Richard Maddox was anywhere near Calder after eleven at night."

Lena went quiet.

"Gabe, Richard Maddox is not just a developer."

"I know."

"No, you know the public version."

She sent him a link.

Richard sat on the hospital's charitable board.

Two board members from Calder had donated to his redevelopment coalition.

The city councilman pushing the garage sale had attended his daughter's wedding.

The lines were already connecting themselves.

Gabe ended the call and sat beside Emily again.

"You found something, didn't you?"

Her fingers did not move.

He pulled out his phone and replayed her voicemail.

"Gabe, if anything happens, don't believe the first story they tell you."

There was a faint sound in the background he had never noticed before.

A bell.

Then another.

Then a recorded female voice.

"Level four."

Gabe sat upright.

Emily had called him from an elevator.

He replayed the message twice.

The timestamp showed 10:42 p.m.

According to the incident report, Cole claimed he entered the garage at 11:03.

There were twenty-one unexplained minutes between Emily's call and the emergency call.

Dana returned with a plastic cup of water.

"You need to rest."

"I need twenty-one minutes."

She frowned.

Gabe explained.

Dana's expression changed.

"Then you need someone from hospital security."

"Why?"

She looked toward the door again.

"Because Cole Maddox came here Friday night carrying Emily's purse."

Gabe stood.

"Where is it now?"

"Security took it downstairs with the rest of her belongings."

They rode the elevator in silence.

The property room was in the basement behind two locked steel doors.

A security supervisor named Harold Finch checked Emily's file and frowned.

"That's strange."

"What is?"

Harold turned the monitor toward Gabe.

The property log showed Emily's purse had been checked in at 12:14 a.m.

At 1:07 a.m., someone signed it back out.

The signature belonged to a hospital administrator named Victor Hale.

Dana's face went pale.

"Victor works directly for the board."

Gabe stared at the digital signature.

"Where's the purse?"

Harold searched another screen.

"According to this, it was returned at 1:26."

The purse was still on a shelf inside a clear evidence bag.

Gabe inspected it without opening anything.

Wallet.

Keys.

Lip balm.

Notebook.

But there was no phone.

Dana checked the intake record.

"Her phone was listed when she arrived."

Gabe looked at the sign-out time again.

Nineteen minutes.

Someone had taken Emily's property for nineteen minutes and returned it without her phone.

Then Harold whispered from behind the computer.

"You're going to want to see this."

The property room camera showed Victor Hale entering at 1:06 a.m.

He was not alone.

Walking beside him was Cole Maddox.
