Chapter 5 - The Boy Who Smiled.

By sunrise, Gabe had stopped thinking of the hospital as a place of healing.

It had become a map of people who knew too much and said too little.

Lena enhanced the elevator thumbnail without inventing details that were not there.

The fourth figure remained indistinct, but the cane matched one visible in several photographs of Arthur Bell at Calder charity events.

Gabe did not need certainty yet.

He needed pressure.

At 7:15 a.m., Cole Maddox returned.

This time he came alone.

He wore a navy shirt, expensive sneakers, and the same silver college ring.

He carried no flowers.

He walked directly toward Emily's room as if he expected permission to exist wherever he chose.

Gabe stepped into the doorway.

"You can't go in."

Cole stopped.

For a second, the arrogance from the night before returned.

"I just wanted to check on her."

"You checked on her through the glass while laughing."

Cole's smile disappeared.

"You misunderstood."

"Then explain it."

Cole looked toward the nurses' station.

"It was a bad joke."

"About an unconscious woman?"

"People say stupid things when they're stressed."

Gabe leaned one shoulder against the door frame.

"Where were you at 10:41 Friday night?"

Cole's eyes flickered.

"I already talked to the police."

"I didn't ask what you told them."

"Then what are you asking?"

"Whether you want to tell the truth before the elevator does."

Cole went pale.

The reaction lasted only a moment, but Gabe saw it.

Then Cole recovered and smiled again.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"Maybe."

Gabe lowered his voice.

"But you do."

Cole stepped closer.

"You think looking like that makes people afraid of you?"

Gabe glanced at his tattooed hands.

"I'm not asking you to be afraid."

"Good."

"I'm asking you to remember accurately."

Cole's jaw tightened.

"Emily was upset."

Gabe said nothing.

Cole continued because silence made him uncomfortable.

"She accused people of things she couldn't prove."

"What things?"

Cole realized too late that he had moved beyond the public story.

"I don't know."

"You just said she accused people."

"Everyone knew she was causing problems."

"Everyone who?"

Cole looked toward the elevator.

"Forget it."

He turned to leave.

Gabe did not follow.

"Cole."

The young man stopped.

"What was in the brown envelope?"

Cole's shoulders stiffened.

He walked faster without answering.

Lena called seconds later.

"That was useful."

Gabe glanced toward a ceiling corner.

"You got the audio?"

"Crystal clear from your phone."

Gabe had started recording before Cole arrived.

The recording did not prove what happened in the garage.

It proved Cole knew Emily had made accusations that night.

That was more than his police statement admitted.

Lena sounded energized now.

"I also found Mason Reed's father."

"Let me guess."

"City zoning attorney."

"And Tyler?"

"His mother runs public relations for Calder."

Gabe looked through the glass at Emily.

Three young men connected to three institutions touching the same redevelopment deal.

It was no coincidence.

Then Dana rushed from Emily's room.

"Gabe."

He stood immediately.

"What happened?"

"Her heart rate spiked."

He moved toward the bed.

Emily's eyelids fluttered.

Her lips moved beneath the oxygen line.

Gabe leaned close enough to hear the faintest whisper.

"Not Cole."

He froze.

"Emily, who?"

Her eyes never opened.

May you like

Her mouth moved one more time.

"The man behind him."
