The anonymous package made everyone suspicious again.
If someone had possessed Emily's necklace, that person had either taken it at the hospital or received it from whoever did.
The recovered cloud audio meant the pendant itself was no longer necessary as evidence, but the chain could still reveal who handled it.
Forensic testing found partial prints too incomplete for immediate identification.
More useful was a microscopic thread caught in the clasp.
Dark green wool.
Hospital surveillance from Friday night showed Julian wearing a dark gray suit.
Victor wore navy.
Arthur wore a tan coat.
Then Dana remembered the unidentified visitor from the early confusion in the trauma bay.
She had thought the man wore a dark suit.
Carla remembered something different.
"It might have been green."
Lena searched photographs from a Calder fundraiser held earlier that same evening.
One man wore a distinctive dark green wool blazer.
Daniel Kessler.
The Maddox attorney.
Gabe stared at the photograph.
Kessler had arrived at the hospital later pretending to bring flowers and concern.
But he may have been there hours earlier.
Detective Price obtained surveillance from a parking garage across the street.
At 12:47 a.m., Kessler's car entered the hospital complex.
At 1:18, it left.
Victor entered Emily's property room at 1:06.
The timeline overlapped perfectly.
Price confronted Kessler with the records.
He denied touching Emily or taking the necklace.
Then investigators showed him the green fiber report.
His confidence weakened.
Kessler finally admitted Richard called him after Julian reported the incident.
Richard told him to get to the hospital before the situation became "unmanageable."
Kessler found Emily in the trauma bay and removed the necklace after noticing a tiny blinking light beneath the chain.
He claimed he did not know it was a recorder until later.
"Why mail it back?" Price asked.
Kessler looked exhausted.
"Because Richard told me yesterday that if anyone went down, it would be me."
The empire was consuming its own defenders.
Kessler agreed to surrender emails, call records, and written instructions in exchange for consideration based on his cooperation.
The messages showed Richard directing legal and public relations responses within minutes of Emily's fall.
They also showed Julian asking Kessler whether the hospital had "cleaned the phone."
By afternoon, warrants were executed at Calder offices and Maddox Development headquarters.
Julian was taken into custody for questioning on allegations connected to obstruction, evidence interference, financial misconduct, and Emily's fall.
Richard was ordered to surrender business records and appeared before investigators with three attorneys.
Gabe watched the news from Emily's hospital room but felt strangely empty.
This was the moment he had imagined when he made the phone call and said, "Bring me everything."
He had expected victory to feel louder.
Instead, Emily asked him to turn off the television.
He did.
"Are you disappointed?" she asked.
"No."
"You look disappointed."
Gabe sat beside her.
"I thought making them answer for it would make Friday disappear."
Emily looked at the ceiling.
"It won't."
"I know."
"But maybe it stops the next Friday."
Gabe looked at her and finally understood what she had been fighting for.
Not revenge.
A boundary.
A record.
A point beyond which powerful people could no longer rewrite what happened.
Then Emily's phone, now returned after forensic imaging, displayed a new voicemail notification.
The message had been delayed in cloud synchronization.
Timestamp: Friday, 10:35 p.m.
Five minutes before the necklace recording began.
Sender: Richard Maddox.
Emily pressed play.
