Chapter 2 - The Face in The Photograph.

.The driveway went so quiet that Elena could hear Lily breathing against her chest.
Nick stared first at Elena, then at Richard, then at the photograph trembling in Elena's hand.
"What did Mom just say?"
Vivian recovered quickly.
"I said nothing that matters."
Richard's gaze remained fixed on Mara's face.
"It matters to me."
His voice was low, but Elena saw his hand shake when he reached for the photograph.
She pulled it back.
"You answer me first."
Richard looked at her with an expression Elena had never seen from him before.
It was not authority.
It was grief.
"I knew your mother."
Vivian laughed sharply.
"He knew hundreds of women before we married."
Richard turned toward her.
"Not like Mara."
Nick stepped between them.
"Stop talking in riddles."
Richard rubbed a hand over his mouth.
"Mara Bennett and I were together before I married your mother."
Elena felt her knees weaken.
The words should have sounded impossible, yet the photograph made them brutally real.
"My mother told me my father died before I was born."
Richard looked toward Vivian.
"So did I."
Vivian's expression hardened.
"That is because Mara disappeared."
Elena opened the brown envelope with shaking fingers.
Inside were three yellowed letters, a hospital bracelet, and a small key taped to a card.
Richard reached for the first letter.
Vivian seized his wrist.
"Do not humiliate this family in the driveway."
Elena laughed once, broken and exhausted.
"You already did that when you threw your granddaughter into the street."
Vivian's eyes sharpened.
"That baby is not my concern."
Nick flinched at the cruelty but said nothing.
Elena noticed his silence, and something inside her cooled.
Richard opened the first letter.
His face tightened after the second line.
He read the page twice.
Then he looked at Elena.
"What year were you born?"
Elena told him.
Richard closed his eyes.
Nick cursed under his breath.
"No."
Elena knew exactly what he was thinking.
If Richard was her father, then Richard was also Nick's father.
The marriage, the baby, the years together suddenly seemed contaminated by a possibility too horrible to say aloud.
Nick backed away from her as though the photograph itself were dangerous.
Vivian watched that reaction with an almost invisible flicker of satisfaction.
Elena saw it.
"You knew this could happen."
Vivian did not answer.
Richard unfolded the second letter.
This one was addressed to him but never opened.
Mara had written that she was pregnant and afraid.
She had begged Richard to meet her at a train station outside Charleston before midnight.
At the bottom was one line underlined twice.
If I do not come, it means someone stopped me.
Richard stared at Vivian.
"You told me she left for Europe."
Vivian's face went still.
"I told you what I believed."
Richard stepped closer.
"You gave me a telegram in Mara's name."
Vivian lifted her chin.
"And you believed it because believing was convenient."
That struck him harder than a slap.
Elena unfolded the third letter.
It was not addressed to Richard.
It was addressed to Elena.
My darling girl, if you ever find this, never trust the woman in pearls.
Elena raised her eyes.
Vivian's fingers moved instinctively to her necklace.
Then headlights swept across the drive.
A dark sedan stopped at the gate, and a man in a grey suit stepped out carrying a black legal case.
Vivian smiled for the first time since the suitcase opened.
"Our attorney is here."
Richard's face darkened.

Elena looked down at the final line of Mara's letter.
And if Richard Blackwood is still alive, tell him to ask Adrian Vale what he did to us.
