Chapter 3 - The Woman in Pearls.

.The man walking up the driveway introduced himself as Adrian Vale, general counsel to the Blackwood family for thirty-two years.

He was in his late fifties, silver at the temples, with the calm eyes of someone who had survived by never looking surprised.

Elena immediately hated how familiar Vivian's expression became when she saw him.

"Adrian, thank God."

Richard did not share her relief.

"Why are you here?"

Adrian lifted the legal case.

"Vivian called me about the divorce and a possible domestic disturbance."

Nick looked at his mother.

"You called a lawyer before you told Dad what was happening?"

Vivian ignored him.

Adrian's eyes fell on the open suitcase.

For half a second, his composure vanished.

Elena saw it.

"So you know this suitcase too."

"I know old luggage when I see it."

Richard handed him Mara's letter.

"Read the last sentence."

Adrian did not take the page.

"I do not review private correspondence in driveways."

Richard stepped closer.

"Read it."

Adrian finally accepted the letter.

His eyes moved to the final line and stopped.

Vivian crossed her arms.

"This melodrama has gone far enough."

Elena rose carefully with Lily against her shoulder.

"No, it is finally beginning."

Nick's face was pale.

He kept glancing at Elena and the baby, unable to decide whether to move closer or farther away.

Elena understood the instinct but resented him for making it visible.

Hours earlier he had demanded she leave.

Now he was frightened that loving her might have made him monstrous.

Richard ordered everyone into the library.

Vivian refused.

"This is my home."

Richard looked at her coldly.

"The deed is in my name."

For the first time, Vivian obeyed.

Inside, the golden light faded behind tall windows while servants quietly disappeared from the hallways.

Elena sat with Lily on a leather sofa beneath a portrait of Nick at age twelve.

The resemblance to Richard suddenly looked less certain than she had always assumed.

Richard placed Mara's letters on the desk.

"Adrian, did you know she was pregnant?"

Adrian answered too quickly.

"No."

Vivian interrupted.

"This is absurd."

Richard pointed at the door.

"Leave if you cannot remain silent."

Vivian stayed.

Elena watched Adrian instead.

"Why did my mother name you?"

Adrian removed his glasses and polished them with a white handkerchief.

"I handled several matters for Richard in those years."

"What matters?"

"Property, settlements, travel arrangements."

Elena leaned forward.

"Women?"

Adrian's mouth tightened.

Vivian finally snapped.

"Mara was paid to disappear."

Richard turned toward her so slowly that everyone stopped moving.

"What did you say?"

Vivian realized the mistake and tried to repair it.

"I assumed she was paid."

"By whom?"

No one answered.

Elena pulled the small key from the envelope.

There was a brass tag attached to it stamped with the number 317.

Adrian's face changed again.

Elena held the key up.

"What does this open?"

Adrian looked at Vivian.

That glance was enough.

Richard saw it too.

"Tell her."

Adrian exhaled.

"There used to be private storage lockers beneath Charleston Union Station."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Locker 317?"

Adrian said nothing.

Nick finally spoke.

"We go tonight."

Vivian stood abruptly.

"No one is going anywhere."

Elena looked at her.

"Why are you scared of a locker that has been closed for thirty years?"

Vivian walked to the fireplace and stared into the empty grate.

When she turned back, her face was calm again.

"Because whatever your mother put there was meant to ruin this family."

Richard's voice became icy.

"Or save herself from it."

Adrian closed his legal case.

"There is another problem."

Everyone looked at him.

"The old station lockers were removed ten years ago."

Elena's heart sank.

May you like

Then Adrian added the sentence that made Vivian go white.

"But Locker 317 was transferred unopened to Blackwood private storage."
