Chapter 9 - The Signature on The Will.

.Vivian walked past Adrian and opened a second archive box hidden beneath the wine rack.

She removed a sealed envelope bearing Richard's father's name.

Richard stared at it.

"My father died before Nick was born."

Vivian handed him the envelope.

"He knew more than you think."

Inside was a copy of a family trust created by Harold Blackwood, Richard's father.

The trust controlled a significant voting block in Blackwood Industries.

Its inheritance clause was brutally specific.

Control would pass to Richard's first biological child or that child's descendants.

Nick sat down slowly.

Elena felt the room tilt again.

Richard read the clause twice.

"My father knew about Mara?"

Vivian nodded.

"He hired investigators."

"Then why did he never tell me?"

"Because he despised scandal more than he loved truth."

Adrian added quietly, "He believed Mara had left voluntarily."

Vivian looked at him with contempt.

"You told him that."

Adrian's face hardened.

"And you paid me to."

Nick looked between them.

"You both sold my life."

Vivian ignored him.

She pointed at Elena.

"If her paternity is verified, the trust transfers to her."

Elena finally understood the driveway.

The divorce was not only about control over Nick.

Vivian had wanted Elena gone before anyone saw the suitcase, before Richard returned, before Mara's past could reach the estate.

Richard looked sick.

"You threw a woman with a newborn into the street to protect shares."

Vivian's voice sharpened.

"To protect Nick."

Nick laughed.

"You protected a lie with my name on it."

Richard opened the rest of the trust packet.

A handwritten amendment was clipped to the back.

It had been signed by Harold one week before his death.

The amendment required any disputed heir to submit to independent DNA confirmation.

Elena had already done that.

At the bottom of the page was another signature.

Witness: Adrian Vale.

Adrian stared at it.

Richard turned toward him.

"You knew Elena could inherit."

Adrian said nothing.

Nick stepped closer.

"That is why you helped Mom hide Mara."

Adrian finally snapped.

"I was twenty-seven years old and terrified."

"You were old enough to destroy lives."

Adrian looked at Nick.

"I was trying to protect you."

"No, you were protecting yourself."

Elena shifted Lily against her shoulder.

"What happens now?"

Richard answered quietly.

"The trust lawyers verify everything."

Vivian smiled.

"Assuming the amendment is valid."

Richard stared at her.

"What did you do?"

Vivian turned toward the staircase.

"You are all assuming Harold signed that paper willingly."

Adrian's eyes widened.

"Vivian, stop."

She faced him.

"You wanted truth."

Then she looked at Richard.

"Your father was dying and heavily medicated."

Richard's mouth tightened.

"You are accusing Adrian of coercing him?"

Vivian smiled again.

"No."

She pointed at the witness line.

"I am saying that signature is not Adrian's."

Adrian stepped forward.

"It is mine."

May you like

Vivian shook her head.

"Then explain why the original amendment in my safe has a different witness."
