Chapter 4 - The Letter Vivian Burned.

.The Blackwood private storage building sat behind an abandoned textile mill twenty minutes from the mansion.
Richard insisted on going himself.
Elena refused to remain behind, even with a newborn in her arms and pain pulling at her stitches.
Nick drove in silence.
Vivian followed in a second car with Adrian.
No one trusted anyone enough to split up.
The storage manager recognized Richard and unlocked a steel cage filled with old trunks, ledgers, paintings, and forgotten family furniture.
Locker 317 had become a sealed cedar chest tagged with the same number.
Elena slid Mara's key into the lock.
It turned.
Inside was a stack of documents wrapped in wax paper.
There was also a cassette tape, a small velvet box, and a photograph of Mara holding a newborn.
Elena stopped breathing.
The baby wore the same silver bracelet tucked inside the suitcase.
On the back Mara had written Elena, three days old.
Richard sat down heavily on a wooden crate.
Nick turned away.
Vivian remained near the door, rigid.
Elena opened the velvet box.
Inside was a man's signet ring engraved with Richard's initials.
Richard recognized it immediately.
"I gave this to Mara."
Vivian's voice was bitter.
"You gave her everything."
Richard stared at her.
"No, I gave you everything."
The words cut deeper than he intended.
Adrian stepped between them.
"We should review the papers in a controlled setting."
Elena laughed without humor.
"You mean somewhere you can make them disappear?"
She unwrapped the first bundle.
The top document was a notarized declaration signed by Mara Bennett.
It stated that Richard Blackwood was the father of her unborn child.
Beneath it was a copy of a blood test consistent with paternity under the limited testing available at the time.
Richard closed his eyes.
Nick's face looked sick.
Elena searched the bundle for more.
She found a carbon copy of a letter Mara had sent to Richard's office.
Across the top, in another handwriting, someone had written DO NOT DELIVER.
Richard recognized the handwriting.
"Vivian."
Vivian did not deny it.
Elena read the letter aloud.
Mara said Vivian had visited her apartment, threatened to destroy her career, and promised to make certain Richard never saw Elena alive if Mara refused to leave Charleston.
Nick stared at his mother.
"You threatened a pregnant woman?"
Vivian's face twisted.
"I protected my marriage."
"You destroyed someone's life."
"She was destroying mine."
Richard slammed his fist onto the crate.
"I was not yours to protect by force."
Vivian laughed bitterly.
"You married me three months later."
Richard looked ashamed.
"Because you told me Mara had taken the money and left."
Elena pulled out another envelope.
It contained burned fragments of paper preserved between clear sheets.
One fragment showed Richard's name.
Another contained the words our daughter.
A third showed the bottom half of Vivian's signature.
Adrian moved suddenly.
He reached for the packet.
Elena stepped back.
"Do not touch it."
Richard stared at Adrian.
"Why do you care about burned paper?"
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Because old accusations can be misleading."
Elena found a typed note attached to the fragments.
Mara had written that she watched Vivian burn Richard's reply letter in a kitchen sink after Adrian delivered it to her apartment by mistake.
Richard looked at Adrian.
"You told me Mara never answered."
Adrian's face lost all color.
Nick stepped toward him.
"What else did you lie about?"
Before Adrian could answer, the storage lights went out.
A metal door slammed somewhere behind them.
May you like
Lily began to cry.
Then Elena smelled smoke.
