Chapter 14 - The Last Lie on The Staircase.

.Richard denied Vivian's accusation immediately.
Elena wanted to believe him.
But belief had become expensive.
The district attorney produced a copy of an email sent to Richard two months before Elena and Nick's wedding.
The subject line read Mara Bennett's Daughter.
Richard's office had opened the message.
Elena stared at him.
"You knew."
Richard looked genuinely confused.
"I never saw that."
His former executive assistant was called in for questioning.
She admitted Adrian routinely screened sensitive family correspondence.
The email had been printed and placed in Richard's red briefing folder.
That folder disappeared the same afternoon.
Security archives showed Adrian entering Richard's office after hours.
Vivian's supposed proof began to collapse.
Then investigators recovered the original email metadata.
The message had been sent from an account created by Vivian herself.
It was not a warning meant to reach Richard.
It was insurance designed to make him look guilty later.
Elena felt something inside her finally settle.
Vivian had not merely lied in moments of panic.
She had built exits inside her lies years in advance.
Richard asked Elena to return to the mansion one final time before he closed it for renovations and legal inventory.
She agreed only because Mara wanted to see the staircase where everything had changed.
Golden light filled the driveway again.
The scene looked almost identical to the afternoon Elena had been expelled.
But this time Vivian stood at the bottom of the stairs under guard after being brought to collect personal items.
Elena stood above her holding Lily.
Nick waited near the fountain.
Richard stood beside Mara.
Vivian looked up at Elena.
"Enjoy the house."
Elena shook her head.
"I do not want your house."
Vivian smiled thinly.
"You want the company."
"I want my name back."
Vivian's expression shifted.
Elena continued.
"You took my father."
"You took my mother."
"You tried to take my daughter's safety."
"And you taught your son that cruelty was loyalty."
Nick lowered his eyes.
Vivian looked at him.
"I did everything for you."
Nick finally answered.
"No."
"You did everything so I would owe you."
Vivian's face cracked with anger.
"Without me, you would be Adrian Vale's bastard son with nothing."
Nick stepped closer.
"Then nothing would have been more honest."
Richard looked at him with quiet pride.
Vivian saw it and seemed to understand she had lost the one thing she claimed to protect.
Before officers led her away, she turned to Elena.
"You think Richard will be a father now?"
Elena did not react.
"He failed you before you were born."
Richard accepted the accusation without defending himself.
Elena looked at him.
"That part is true."
Richard nodded.
"I will spend whatever years I have left proving what I can be now."
Mara took his hand, not as a lover, but as someone who remembered another life.
Elena looked toward the suitcase sitting on the driveway where it had first opened.
The old leather no longer looked like trash.
It looked like evidence that survived everyone who tried to bury it.
Nick approached Elena after Vivian left.
"I signed the divorce withdrawal."
Elena shook her head.
"I did not ask you to."
"I know."
He swallowed.
"I also signed full temporary custody to you while I start therapy and cooperate with investigators."
Elena studied his face.
For once, he was not asking for forgiveness as payment for doing the right thing.
Then he handed her a sealed envelope.
"There is one more thing from my mother's safe."
Inside was a handwritten page from Vivian dated the day Lily was born.
