Chapter 13 - The Mother Who Came Back.

.The retired nurse's testimony changed the investigation from scandal to crime.

She admitted Mara had not been violent when she was committed.

Mara had arrived with a head injury after falling down apartment stairs during a confrontation.

The original intake form listed the cause as accidental.

The nurse now said Vivian had paid her to remove one sentence.

Patient states she was pushed.

Elena looked at Vivian across the ballroom.

"Did you push my mother?"

Vivian did not answer.

Mara did.

"She did."

Richard's face went white.

Vivian finally stood.

"Mara grabbed me first."

Mara shook her head.

"I grabbed the letter you were burning."

Vivian's voice rose.

"You were going to destroy everything I had."

Richard stared at his wife.

"No, Vivian."

"You destroyed it yourself."

Police arrested Vivian on suspicion of assault, evidence tampering, witness bribery, and conspiracy related to Mara's confinement.

She did not cry.

She simply removed her pearl necklace and placed it on the table before they cuffed her.

Elena watched the pearls lie there like a dead symbol.

Adrian was also taken into custody for obstruction, document fraud, and his role in the kidnapping incident involving Lily.

Nick remained seated after everyone left.

He looked smaller without the Blackwood certainty around him.

Richard approached him.

"You are still my son."

Nick stared at the floor.

"I am not your blood."

"No."

Richard sat beside him.

"But I taught you to ride a bicycle."

"I held you when you broke your arm."

"I sat outside your school principal's office when you punched that boy who mocked your stutter."

"I was your father every day I knew how to be."

Nick's eyes filled.

Elena turned away to give them privacy.

Mara touched her hand.

"You still love him."

Elena looked at Nick.

"I loved who I believed he was."

Mara nodded.

"That is different."

Elena asked the question she had been afraid to ask.

"Why did you let me think you were dead?"

Mara closed her eyes.

"I did not."

She explained that after years in treatment, she had tried to contact Elena repeatedly.

Letters were returned.

Calls were redirected.

A social worker eventually told her Elena had signed a request for no contact.

Elena had never signed anything.

Adrian's law office had handled the paperwork.

Mara believed Elena hated her.

Elena believed Mara had died after an overdose in another state.

Both stories had been manufactured.

They held each other and cried without elegance.

There was no cinematic reunion.

There was anger, confusion, relief, and thirty lost years sitting between them.

That night, Elena brought Mara to the hotel suite and placed Lily in her arms.

Mara stared at her granddaughter for a long time.

"She has your eyes."

Elena smiled for the first time in days.

Then her phone rang.

It was the district attorney.

Vivian had offered a statement in exchange for a reduced charge.

She claimed Adrian was responsible for everything.

And she said she had proof that Richard had known Elena existed before the wedding.
