Chapter 12: The Quiet Months

Summer faded into autumn. The leaves outside Firehouse 3 turned brilliant shades of amber and crimson. For Liam, the frantic pace of the job continued. There were car accidents, medical emergencies, and a few minor kitchen fires. But the memory of the fourteenth floor never fully faded.

He kept Sarah’s terrified, soot-stained face burned into his memory, specifically the moment she had pressed the ring into his heavy glove. It served as a constant reminder of the weight of the badge on his chest. It reminded him that on their absolute worst days, people looked to him for a sliver of hope.

Liam kept in touch with both families. It started as a few text messages with Alex, just checking in on Grace’s sleeping habits. With David, it was occasional updates on Noah’s weight gain and Mary’s physical therapy.

One chilly November evening, Liam was sitting at the station's long wooden dining table, polishing his boots. Captain Miller walked in, holding a steaming mug of coffee.

"You're quiet tonight, Carter," Miller observed, taking a seat across from him.

"Just thinking, Cap," Liam replied, working the polish into the leather. "Thinking about how fast everything can change. One minute you're getting in an elevator, the next minute your whole life is hanging by a thread."

Miller nodded slowly. "That’s the nature of the beast, kid. But you didn't let the thread snap. Don't forget that part."
