Chapter 16: The Celebration

The community park was bathed in the warm, golden sunlight of a late May afternoon. Colorful banners fluttered between the great oak trees, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter, acoustic music, and the unmistakable chatter of a large family gathering.

Liam parked his truck and walked toward the picnic pavilion, holding a large, brightly wrapped gift under each arm. He was dressed casually in a plain gray t-shirt and jeans, a stark contrast to the heavy turnout gear he had worn the day he met these families.

Before he even reached the pavilion steps, a voice called out over the crowd. "Liam!"

Alex jogged over, clapping Liam on the shoulder with a massive, beaming smile. Close behind him was David, who looked ten years younger than the exhausted, terrified man Liam had met in the surgical waiting room.

"You made it," David said, pulling Liam into a brief, heartfelt hug. "We were worried the station might have kept you."

"I wouldn't have missed this for the world," Liam replied, handing over the presents. "Where are the guests of honor?"

David pointed toward the center of the pavilion. There, sitting on a massive quilted blanket spread over the grass, were Sarah and Mary. They were surrounded by a mountain of torn wrapping paper. Between them sat Grace, wearing a tiny floral dress, and Noah, sporting a miniature pair of denim overalls.

Seeing Mary sitting there, vibrant and smiling, hit Liam squarely in the chest. The bandages were long gone, replaced by a soft, stylish haircut that concealed the faint scar on her hairline. She was no longer the tragic, unconscious victim he had carried through the smoke; she was a mother, alive and entirely present.
