Chapter 14: The Milestone

A week before Christmas, it finally happened.
The snow was falling heavily outside City General Hospital, blanketing the streets in pristine white. Inside, Mary was entirely bundled up in a wool coat, standing on her own two feet. The wheelchair was gone.
David stood next to her, holding a car seat. Tucked safely inside, wrapped in a thick blue blanket, was Noah. He was small for his age, but his eyes were bright and alert, and the monitor wires were a thing of the past.
"Ready?" David asked, looking at his wife.
Mary took a deep breath, looking around the NICU that had been their second home for nearly five months. She hugged the lead nurse, crying tears of sheer joy.
"I'm ready," Mary said.
They walked out through the double doors, stepping into the crisp winter air. Driving home, the silence in the car was beautiful. No beeping monitors, no intercom announcements. Just the soft hum of the heater and Noah's quiet breathing in the back seat.

When they finally unlocked their front door and stepped into the living room, Mary broke down. She dropped her purse and leaned against David, sobbing uncontrollably. It wasn't out of sadness; it was the release of five months of agonizing tension.
"We made it," David whispered, wrapping his arms tightly around her and pulling her close. "We're home."
