Chapter 2: The Weight of Survival

"What is your name?" Liam asked, his voice cutting through the wailing fire alarm. He kept his eyes locked on the conscious woman, needing her to focus on him and not the suffocating gray smoke bleeding into the elevator.
"Sarah," she choked out, wiping a mixture of soot and tears from her cheeks.
"Okay, Sarah. My name is Liam. I need you to listen to me very carefully," he said, moving quickly. He unclipped a spare rebreather mask from his belt and secured it over her nose and mouth. "Breathe normal. I'm going to get Mary, and then we are walking out of here together. Do you understand?"
Sarah nodded, her eyes wide behind the plastic mask. The pure oxygen hit her lungs, stopping her hyperventilation and giving her a sudden, desperate burst of clarity.
Liam turned his attention back to the unconscious doctor. Mary’s breathing was shallow, and the gash on her forehead was still weeping dark blood. He didn't have time for a full triage; the structural groans of the building told him the floor above them was nearing a critical failure.
With practiced efficiency, Liam slid his arms under Mary, hoisting her limp body over his broad shoulders in a standard fireman's carry. She was heavy, but the adrenaline surging through Liam’s veins masked the strain on his back.
"Alright, Sarah. Stand up," Liam commanded gently.
Sarah braced her hands against the metal wall of the elevator and pushed herself up. Her legs trembled violently beneath the weight of her pregnancy and her sheer terror, but she managed to stand.

"Grab the back of my coat. Grip the harness strap and do not let go," Liam instructed. "Keep your eyes on my back. We're going to the stairwell."
With Mary secured on his shoulders and Sarah tethered to his heavy turnout gear, Liam stepped out of the compromised elevator and into the blinding, toxic fog of the fourteenth floor.
