Chapter 5: The Promise Kept

Three hours later, the adrenaline had completely worn off, leaving Liam feeling like he had been hit by a freight train. He had showered at the firehouse, changing into his station uniform—a clean navy t-shirt and cargo pants. But instead of going home to sleep, he drove straight to City General Hospital.

The emergency waiting room was a sea of anxious families. Liam walked up to the front desk, but before he could ask for an update, he spotted a man pacing frantically near the double doors of the maternity ward. The man’s tie was askew, his hair was a mess, and his eyes were red-rimmed.

Liam knew instinctively who it was.

He walked over, his heavy boots quiet on the linoleum floor. "Excuse me. Are you Alex?"

The man spun around, looking at Liam’s fire department shirt. "Yes! Yes, I'm Alex. Are you... did you bring Sarah in? Is she okay? They won't tell me anything, they just said she's in emergency delivery—"

"Hey, take a breath, man," Liam said gently, placing a steadying hand on Alex's shoulder. "My name is Liam. I pulled your wife out of the medical center this morning."

Alex let out a shaking breath, burying his face in his hands. "Thank God. Thank you. Thank you so much."

"She's an incredibly strong woman, Alex. She walked down fourteen flights of stairs while in labor." Liam reached into his pocket and pulled out the diamond ring. He held it out.

Alex stared at it, confused. "Her ring? Why do you have this?"

"When we were trapped in the smoke, she gave it to me. She was terrified, but her only thought was making sure this got back to you," Liam explained, his voice thick with emotion. "I told her she was going to survive, and that I’d make sure you put it back on her hand."

Alex gently took the ring, his hands trembling as tears spilled over his eyelashes. He looked at the firefighter, entirely overwhelmed with gratitude.

Before Alex could speak, a nurse pushed through the double doors. "Family of Sarah Jenkins?"

"That's me," Alex said instantly.

The nurse smiled warmly. "You can come in now, dad. Your wife is resting, and you have a beautiful, perfectly healthy baby girl."
