Chapter 9: The Awakening

Three days later, Liam found himself walking through the sterile, brightly lit corridors of City General Hospital on his day off. He carried a small, plush dalmatian toy in one hand and a bouquet of yellow sunflowers in the other.

He stopped at the front desk of the intensive care unit. Before he could even ask for a room number, a familiar voice called his name.

"Liam!"

He turned to see David rushing down the hall. The man still looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes, but the oppressive, frantic energy from three days ago was entirely gone. Instead, he was beaming.

"She woke up," David breathed out, grabbing Liam by the shoulders. "About an hour ago. She’s confused and in pain, but she’s awake. And she squeezed my hand."

A massive wave of relief washed over Liam. He let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding for three days. "That’s incredible, David. How is your boy?"

"Growing stronger every day," David smiled, wiping a stray tear from his cheek. "He’s off the ventilator. Just on a CPAP machine now. The doctors are amazed."

David led Liam down the hall and gently pushed open the door to Room 412. Mary was lying in the hospital bed, her head wrapped in thick white bandages. She looked frail, but her eyes—a striking, intelligent green—were open and alert.

David walked over and kissed her forehead. "Mary, sweetheart. This is Liam. He’s the firefighter who pulled you out."

Mary turned her head slowly, her eyes locking onto Liam. She couldn't speak much yet, her throat raw from the breathing tube, but the look of profound, overwhelming gratitude in her eyes said more than words ever could. She reached out a trembling hand.

Liam stepped forward and gently took it, careful of the IV lines. He smiled, placing the small plush dalmatian at the foot of her bed. "It is really good to formally meet you, Doc. You had us all pretty worried for a second."
