Chapter 6: The Promise Fulfilled

The hospital room was quiet, bathed in the soft, artificial glow of bedside monitors. As Alex pushed the heavy wooden door open, his breath caught in his throat. Sarah was propped up against a mountain of white pillows, looking exhausted, pale, and more beautiful than he had ever seen her. Snuggled against her chest, wrapped in a classic striped hospital blanket, was a tiny, sleeping infant.

Sarah looked up, her tired eyes locking onto his. A wobbly, relieved smile spread across her face. "Hey," she whispered, her voice raspy from the smoke and the screaming of labor.

"Hey," Alex choked out, crossing the room in three long strides. He collapsed into the plastic chair beside her bed and carefully wrapped his arms around both of them, burying his face in the crook of Sarah's neck. He wept silently, the sheer terror of the morning finally washing out of his system.

"I thought I lost you," he murmured against her skin. "When I saw the news about the fire... I couldn't breathe."

Sarah rested her cheek against his messy hair. "I thought so too. If it weren't for Liam... I wouldn't be here. She wouldn't be here."

Alex pulled back just enough to look at his newborn daughter's flushed, perfect little face. Then, he reached into his pocket. He took Sarah’s left hand, gently rubbing her soot-stained knuckles, and slid the diamond ring back onto her fourth finger. It fit perfectly, right where it belonged.

"The firefighter gave it back to me," Alex said softly, kissing her hand. "He told me you gave it to him in the elevator. He promised he'd make sure I put it back on you."

Sarah looked at the ring, the sparkling stone catching the dim light. The crushing despair she had felt in that smoke-filled cabin seemed like a lifetime ago. "He kept his promise," she whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "He brought us home."
