Chapter 10: The Gala of Glass

Three months passed. Spring began to thaw the estate, bringing blooming hydrangeas and warmer breezes. Clara was heavily pregnant now, her due date only weeks away. Life had been peacefully quiet, almost too quiet.
Julian had established a philanthropic foundation in Clara's name, dedicated to providing housing and healthcare for underprivileged expectant mothers. To launch it, they were hosting a massive charity gala—not at the estate, but at the Metropolitan Art Museum in the heart of the city.
The night of the event, the museum was transformed into a paradise of white roses and soft gold lighting. Clara wore a stunning bespoke gown that draped elegantly over her bump, her arm looped securely through Julian's. They were the undisputed king and queen of the city's social scene.
But midway through the evening, as Clara was speaking with the mayor, a sudden hush fell over the room's entrance.
Victoria Sterling stood at the top of the grand staircase, wearing a garish red dress that screamed for attention. Beside her stood a scruffy, nervous-looking man clutching a manila folder. Security moved to intercept them, but the paparazzi outside had already surged forward, their cameras flashing wildly.
Julian’s face darkened, his body instantly tensing as he stepped in front of Clara.
"Wait," Victoria shouted, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Before you all write checks to the saintly Clara Vanguard, you should know who she really is!"
The room went dead silent. Arthur Vanguard watched from the shadows near the bar, a smug smile playing on his lips.
"This man," Victoria pointed dramatically to the scruffy man beside her, "is Jimmy Vance. Clara's stepbrother from her foster home in Ohio. He has police reports proving she was arrested for theft when she was seventeen!"
Murmurs erupted across the ballroom. Julian signaled security to drag them out, but Clara placed a gentle, staying hand on his arm. She didn't look panicked. She looked utterly exhausted by the theatricality of it all.
Clara stepped out from behind Julian, facing the crowd, and calmly walked toward the staircase.
"Hello, Jimmy," Clara said, her voice echoing clearly in the quiet room.
The man swallowed hard, looking deeply uncomfortable. "Hey, Clara."
Clara turned to the crowd, completely unbothered. "It's true. When I was seventeen, Jimmy and I were living in a foster home where the parents locked the pantry and starved us. I broke into a grocery store to steal bread, peanut butter, and baby formula for the younger kids in the house. I was arrested, and the judge, upon seeing the conditions of our home, dismissed the charges and placed us in better care."
She turned her gaze back to Victoria, whose triumphant smile was rapidly melting.
"If you thought exposing the fact that I survived poverty and fought for my family would shame me, Victoria, you are as out of touch as you are cruel," Clara stated, her voice ringing with absolute authority. She looked at Jimmy. "How much did they pay you to come here, Jimmy?"
Jimmy looked down at his shoes. "Ten grand. I'm sorry, Clara. I’m behind on rent."

Clara sighed softly. "Security, please escort Ms. Sterling off the premises. Hand Jimmy over to my assistant. We’ll get his rent sorted."
The crowd erupted into deafening applause. Victoria was dragged out, screaming and thrashing, while Arthur Vanguard quietly slipped out the back door, realizing his war was irrevocably lost. Clara stood tall, the flashbulbs lighting up her serene face, having turned her enemy's greatest weapon into her own undeniable triumph.
