Chapter 7: The Narrative

The media circus outside the Sterling Estate raged for three solid days. News anchors speculated wildly, painting Clara as everything from a cunning seductress to a helpless victim. High-society blogs buzzed with rumors, while the paparazzi practically set up camp at the front gates, their telephoto lenses trained on the mansion's massive windows.

Julian was having none of it.

"We don't hide, but we also don't let them dictate the story," Julian told Clara on the fourth morning, sliding a cup of decaf coffee across the kitchen island. He had dismissed the private chef for the morning, preferring the quiet intimacy of making breakfast for his wife himself.

"So, what’s the play?" Clara asked, taking a sip. She was feeling stronger, the color returning to her cheeks after a few days of enforced bed rest. The bandage on her forehead had been replaced by a small, discreet strip of medical tape.

"An exclusive," Julian said, leaning against the counter. "Prime time. One interview with Diane Sterling from the National Chronicle. We lay out the facts on our terms. We announce the marriage, we confirm the pregnancy, and we make it abundantly clear that the Vanguard family's internal politics are none of the public's business."

Clara traced the rim of her mug, thoughtful. "And what about Victoria? Or your aunt and uncle?"

"We leave them out of it," Julian replied smoothly. "Mentioning them gives them relevance. Right now, Victoria is a pariah, and Eleanor is terrified I'll leak the SEC files. By ignoring them publicly, we strip them of their remaining power."

That evening, the camera crew arrived. Clara wore a soft, blush-pink dress that highlighted her pregnancy, her demeanor calm and radiant. Sitting beside Julian in the estate’s grand library, his hand holding hers, she didn't look like a former maid. She looked like the future of the Vanguard dynasty.

When the interviewer gently probed about her humble beginnings, Clara didn't shy away. "I grew up in the foster system, Diane," Clara said smoothly, offering a warm, genuine smile. "I know the value of hard work, and I know what it means to build a life from the ground up. Julian and I share those core values, even if we came from different worlds. Wealth doesn't define character; resilience does."

Julian looked at her with such raw, unfiltered adoration that the clip instantly went viral. By midnight, the court of public opinion had fiercely and overwhelmingly sided with Clara.
