Chapter 12: A Father's Promise

The private maternity suite was quiet, save for the soft, rhythmic hum of the medical monitors. Clara was fast asleep, the sheer exhaustion of labor finally claiming her.

Julian sat in a plush armchair next to the bassinet, holding Maya against his chest. The infant was incredibly light, yet to Julian, she felt like the center of gravity for his entire universe. He stared down at her sleeping face, tracing the delicate slope of her nose.

Growing up, the Vanguard name had been a heavy, suffocating mantle. Julian’s own father had been a phantom—a man who valued stock portfolios over school plays, and profit margins over paternal affection. Love in the Vanguard household was conditional, measured in achievements and calculated alliances.

Looking at his daughter, Julian felt a fierce, burning vow solidify in his chest. You will never know that coldness, he promised her silently. You will never have to earn your place in this family. You are loved simply because you exist.

A soft knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. A nurse peeked her head in, carrying a massive, ostentatious arrangement of white orchids and silver ribbons.

"Excuse me, Mr. Vanguard," the nurse whispered. "These just arrived via private courier. There's a card."

Julian frowned, gently placing Maya back into her bassinet before stepping into the hallway to intercept the delivery. He plucked the heavy cardstock from the envelope. It bore the unmistakable embossed crest of his aunt, Eleanor Vanguard.

Julian, the card read. Congratulations on the birth of the child. It is time we put this unfortunate friction behind us for the sake of the family legacy. We expect an invitation to the christening. — Eleanor & Arthur.

Julian’s jaw tightened. It wasn't an apology; it was a strategic maneuver. Arthur’s failed attempt to humiliate Clara at the gala had backfired spectacularly, and now they were trying to weave themselves back into his good graces to protect their own standing.

"Nurse," Julian said softly, his voice devoid of any warmth.

"Yes, sir?"

"Take these flowers down to the general maternity ward and give them to a family who might appreciate them," Julian instructed, ripping the card in half and tossing it into a nearby waste bin. "And inform hospital security that if anyone by the name of Eleanor or Arthur Vanguard attempts to enter this floor, they are to be arrested for trespassing."

He walked back into the room, closing the door firmly on his family’s toxic legacy. His real family was right here.
