Chapter 4: Sanctuary

Dr. Aris, a discreet and highly trusted physician on Julian’s payroll, arrived within the hour. He moved with quiet efficiency, examining the cut on Clara’s forehead before checking the baby's vitals.
Julian paced the length of the bedroom like a caged panther, stopping only when the steady, rhythmic whoosh-whoosh of a fetal heartbeat filled the quiet room via the portable ultrasound machine. The sound stopped him dead in his tracks.
"A strong, healthy heartbeat," Dr. Aris smiled warmly, packing away his instruments. "Both mother and child are remarkably resilient, Mr. Vanguard. I recommend a few days of strict bed rest, a nutrient-rich diet, and absolutely no stress. The laceration on her forehead is superficial; it will heal without a scar."
"Thank you, Doctor," Julian said, his posture relaxing fractionally.
Once they were alone, Julian sat on the edge of the bed. He had changed out of his formal wear into a simple gray sweater and dark slacks, looking less like a titan of industry and more like a weary man finally finding port in a storm.
Clara leaned back against the mountain of pillows. "You can stop looking at me like I'm made of spun glass, Julian."
"You were bleeding on the floor," he replied, the image clearly burned into his retinas. "I should have protected you better."
"You did protect me," Clara said softly, reaching out to take his hand. "You built a life where I could hide when I needed to. And you came back exactly when I needed you most. Don't let guilt poison this moment."

Julian brought her hand to his lips, kissing her bruised knuckles. "No more hiding, Clara. Tomorrow, the world will know exactly who you are. And they will learn to treat you with the respect commanded by the Vanguard name."
Clara took a deep breath, feeling the gentle kick of their child against her ribs. She was terrified of the spotlight, of Julian's ruthless family, and of the societal sharks that circled their wealth. But looking into her husband's unwavering eyes, she found her courage. "Okay. Tomorrow, we stop hiding."
