Chapter 2: The Reckoning

Julian Vanguard did not raise his voice. He didn't need to. The sheer, gravitational weight of his presence sucked the oxygen from the grand foyer. He strode past the gaping socialites and the paralyzed waitstaff, his eyes fixed only on Clara.
When he reached her, the terrifying mask of the ruthless billionaire dissolved. Julian dropped to his knees on the cold marble, heedless of his expensive suit. He unbuttoned his heavy wool overcoat in one fluid motion, wrapping it securely around Clara’s trembling shoulders. The scent of cedar and cold winter air enveloped her, and for the first time in months, Clara let out a ragged breath of relief.
"I've got you," Julian murmured, his hands gently framing her face, his thumbs carefully avoiding the cut on her forehead. "You're safe now."
Clara leaned into his touch, the coarse wool of his coat scratching pleasantly against her cheek. "You came back."
"I told you I would," he whispered.
Above them, Victoria finally found her voice. It was a high, thin sound, stripped of all its former venom. "Mr. Vanguard... Julian, I—I had no idea. She was hired as temporary help under the name Jane. She... she broke a vase, and I was merely enforcing the estate’s standards."
Julian slowly stood, his frame shielding Clara from Victoria's view. When he turned to face the estate manager, his eyes were devoid of warmth. It was the look of a man who dismantled corporate empires before his morning coffee.
"My wife," Julian said, his voice a low, lethal hum, "bleeding on the floor of her own home. That is what you consider enforcing standards?"
"Sir, please, there has been a terrible misunderstanding—"
"Security," Julian cut her off, not breaking eye contact with Victoria.
Two burly men in suits immediately stepped forward from the periphery of the crowd.
"Escort Ms. Sterling off my property," Julian commanded. "She is not to pack her belongings. Have them boxed and sent to whatever rock she chooses to hide under. If she steps foot in this city’s high society again, I will personally ensure her financial ruin."
Victoria opened her mouth to protest, but the security guards were already flanking her, gripping her arms with firm, unforgiving hands. The crowd parted silently, watching as the once-proud queen of the estate was unceremoniously marched out into the freezing night, leaving behind nothing but the dropped silver shears.

Julian turned his attention to the guests. "The gala is over. Get out."
Without another word to the stunned elite, Julian bent down, carefully scooped his pregnant wife into his arms, and carried her up the grand staircase.
