Chapter 14: The New Normal

The Sterling Estate looked entirely different in the warm light of early summer.

When Julian’s black SUV pulled through the wrought-iron gates, bringing Clara and Maya home from the hospital, they were not met with the cold, imposing silence of the past. Instead, the front doors were thrown wide open, and the entire staff—led by Maria, who was beaming with pride—stood on the steps to welcome them.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Vanguard," Maria said, stepping forward with a small, hand-knitted pink blanket. "We are all so happy for you."

"Thank you, Maria," Clara smiled warmly, adjusting the car seat in Julian’s grip so the staff could get a peek at the sleeping baby. "And it's Clara, remember?"

The estate’s interior had been transformed. The oppressive, museum-like atmosphere Victoria had curated was gone. In its place were vases of fresh, colorful wildflowers, soft rugs, and the comforting scent of vanilla and baking bread drifting from the kitchen. The staff moved freely, without fear, greeting Clara with genuine affection.

They made their way upstairs to the nursery, a room Clara had spent weeks designing. It was bathed in soft, natural light, painted in warm creams and sage greens, filled with books and plush toys.

Julian gently laid Maya into her crib. The baby stirred slightly, let out a soft sigh, and settled back into a deep sleep.

Clara wrapped her arms around Julian’s waist from behind, resting her cheek against his back. He turned, pulling her into a deep, encompassing embrace.

"It's over," Julian murmured into her hair. "Arthur and Eleanor are gone. The trust is completely under our control, and the foundation is fully funded. We're safe."

"I was never truly afraid," Clara looked up at him, her eyes reflecting the soft light of the nursery. "Not since that night in the foyer. I knew you would protect us."

May you like

"I will protect you until my last breath, Clara," Julian promised, kissing her deeply.

As they stood together, watching their daughter sleep in the warmth of the home they had reclaimed and rebuilt, the shadows of the past finally dissolved, leaving nothing but a bright, unwritten future.
