Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

The master suite of the Sterling Estate was a sanctuary of dark mahogany, plush velvet, and roaring fireplaces—a stark contrast to the sterile, judgmental glare of the foyer. Julian gently laid Clara on the edge of the massive king-sized bed, kneeling before her to remove her worn, sensible shoes.

"How did it come to this, Clara?" Julian asked, his voice thick with repressed guilt. "When I left for Geneva, I left you with full access to the private accounts. You were supposed to be safe in the penthouse."

Clara sighed, her hand resting instinctively on her stomach. "Your family, Julian. The moment your plane took off, your uncle orchestrated a freeze on all assets associated with me. They claimed I was a security risk to the Vanguard Trust while you were untraceable during the merger."

Julian's jaw locked. The European acquisition had required absolute radio silence for six months to prevent corporate espionage. He had known his family disapproved of his secret marriage to a woman without a pedigree, but he had underestimated their malice.

"They sent lawyers," Clara continued, her voice soft but steady. "They tried to evict me, threatened to challenge our marriage certificate in court. I knew they would try to take the baby once they realized I was pregnant."

"So you ran."

"I hid," Clara corrected him, a faint, resilient smile touching her lips. "They searched every high-end hotel and private residence. They never thought to look in the servants' quarters of your own summer estate. I used my middle name, dyed my hair darker, and got a job from the agency. It was the only place I felt close to you, the only place I knew they wouldn't look."

Julian closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against her knees. The thought of his wife scrubbing floors and suffering the abuse of sycophants like Victoria to protect their child tore at his chest.

"I will dismantle them," Julian vowed quietly. "Every single board member, every family member who signed off on that freeze. They are done."

"Julian, no," Clara gently stroked his hair. "I didn't survive these last six months for you to start a war. I just wanted our family to be whole."

Julian looked up, his dark eyes resolute. "The war has already started, Clara. And I am going to finish it."
