Chapter 11: The Arrival

The adrenaline of the Metropolitan Art Museum gala carried Clara through the flash of the paparazzi’s cameras and into the quiet sanctuary of their armored limousine. But the moment the heavy doors clicked shut, shielding them from the outside world, the adrenaline abruptly evaporated.
Clara let out a sharp, sudden gasp, her hand flying to her swollen stomach.
Julian’s head snapped toward her, his protective instincts instantly on high alert. "Clara? Are you alright?"
"I think," Clara breathed, squeezing her eyes shut as a powerful wave of pressure radiated through her lower back, "I think Jimmy Vance just sent me into labor."
Julian didn't panic. He tapped the glass partition separating them from the driver. "Change of plans, Marcus. Mount Sinai, private wing. Now."
The limousine surged forward into the New York night. Julian pulled Clara against his side, letting her rest her head on his shoulder while he timed her contractions on his watch. He was a man who controlled global markets and bent billionaires to his will, but in the back of the car, feeling his wife endure the agonizing waves of labor, he felt entirely at the mercy of nature.
Hours later, the sterile, hushed environment of the hospital's VIP maternity suite stood in stark contrast to the chaos of the evening. Julian never left Clara's side. He wiped her brow, held her hand until his knuckles ached, and whispered a constant stream of encouragement.
Just as the first rays of dawn broke over the city skyline, piercing through the hospital blinds, the room was filled with a sharp, healthy cry.
"It’s a girl," Dr. Aris announced, a warm smile crinkling the corners of his eyes as the nurses quickly cleaned the squalling infant.
Clara fell back against the pillows, her face pale and damp with sweat, but a radiant, exhausted smile illuminated her features. Julian leaned down, kissing her forehead gently.
When the nurse placed the tightly swaddled bundle into Clara's arms, Julian felt his breath catch in his throat. The baby had a shock of dark hair and Clara's delicate features. She was tiny, perfect, and utterly dependent on them.
"She’s beautiful," Julian whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he had never fully experienced before.

Clara looked up at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Maya. Maya Rose Vanguard."
Julian brushed a gentle finger against his daughter's impossibly soft cheek. "Welcome to the world, Maya. I promise you, it's going to be a good one."
