Chapter 1 - The Call Across the Water.

.The hospital room was so cold that Valentina's fingertips looked almost blue beneath the blanket.
Machines breathed and blinked around her while a ventilator pushed air into her lungs with a soft mechanical rhythm.
Her head was wrapped in white bandages, and the woman who had once hated hospitals could not open her eyes to complain about the lights.
Dr. Ethan Cole stood beside the bed reading the latest scan when the elevator doors opened down the hall.
A silver-haired man in a black suit walked toward the nurses' station without slowing.
His name was Adrian Moretti.
Valentina had not spoken to her father in nearly three years.
But when the hospital could not reach her husband, someone had found Adrian's number in an old emergency file.
"Where is Maurice?" Adrian asked.
The nurse hesitated.
"We have called him seven times."
Adrian stared through the glass at his daughter.
Seven unanswered calls were not an accident.
Across the harbor, warm gold lights covered the decks of a luxury yacht named Lucent.
Music floated over the black water.
Maurice Laurent stood beneath strings of tiny lights in an open white shirt, smiling as a woman in a silver silk dress handed him a champagne flute.
Her name was Camille Voss.
She was not Valentina.
"Maurice, bring the champagne!" someone shouted from the upper deck.
He laughed and lifted two glasses.
His phone vibrated on the table behind him.
He ignored it.
It vibrated again.
Camille glanced at the screen.
"Hospital," she said.
Maurice's smile weakened for half a second.
Then he turned the phone facedown.
"Not tonight."
Back at St. Catherine Medical Center, Dr. Cole handed Adrian a clipboard.
"There is pressure building where we do not want it," he explained.
"We need authorization to operate now."
Adrian looked at the signature line.
"Her husband is legally next of kin."
"Her husband is unreachable."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
He took the silver pen from his coat pocket.
"Then I am reachable."
He signed.
Before the doctor could turn away, Adrian lifted his phone and called Maurice himself.
The yacht music was loud when Maurice finally answered.
"Hello?"
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"Maurice, where are you?"
The laughter around Maurice seemed to disappear.
He stepped away from Camille.
"Adrian?"
"Your wife is in emergency surgery."
Maurice stopped moving.
The champagne flute slid from his fingers and struck the carpeted deck without breaking.
"What?"
"She was found unconscious beside the marina service road three hours ago."
Maurice's face drained of color.
Camille's smile vanished.
Adrian continued.
"The doctors have been calling you all evening."
Maurice pressed a hand against the railing.
"I didn't know."
Adrian looked through the hospital glass at the doors closing around Valentina's bed.
"That is strange," he said.
"Because the paramedic report says your number was the last one she called before she collapsed."
Maurice said nothing.
Adrian's expression hardened.
"And there is something else you should know."
The surgeon had just handed him Valentina's belongings.
Among them was a cracked phone, a torn envelope, and a small brass key.
Adrian looked down at the envelope.
Maurice's name was written across the front.
"Valentina was carrying something when they found her," Adrian said.
"Something she apparently intended to give you."

On the yacht, Maurice slowly looked toward Camille.
For the first time that night, Camille looked frightened too.
