Chapter 3 - The Locker at Pier Nine.

.Adrian did not answer Maurice's question.
He simply put the brass key back into his pocket and walked away.
Maurice followed him as far as the elevator.
"That property belongs to my wife."
Adrian pressed the call button.
"Exactly."
"You cannot take it."
"Then call the police."
Maurice stopped.
Adrian saw the hesitation and understood more than Maurice intended to reveal.
At dawn, Valentina remained unconscious but stable.
Adrian sat beside her for twenty minutes before leaving the hospital with the key.
The marina was nearly empty in the early morning.
Workers hosed down decks while gulls circled above the gray water.
Locker 314 stood inside a narrow storage building near Pier Nine.
The brass key opened it immediately.
Adrian expected jewelry, documents, perhaps evidence of an affair.
Instead, he found a black laptop, three folders, and a small voice recorder.
A yellow note rested on top.
Dad, if you're the one reading this, I was wrong to stay away.
Adrian had to sit down.
He read the line twice.
Three years earlier, Valentina had married Maurice against Adrian's wishes.
Adrian had believed Maurice was charming but careless.
Valentina had accused her father of trying to control her life.
Neither of them had apologized.
Now an apology waited inside a marina locker while she lay unconscious in a hospital.
Adrian opened the first folder.
It contained copies of financial transfers from the Valentina Moretti Foundation, a charity established with money from her late mother's estate.
Small amounts had moved at first.
Then the transfers became larger.
The destination companies had generic names and post office boxes.
One company appeared repeatedly.
Voss Maritime Consulting.
Adrian knew the surname.
Camille Voss.
The woman on the yacht.
The second folder held emails printed from Maurice's private account.
In one, Maurice told Camille that Valentina was "asking dangerous questions."
In another, Camille wrote that they needed "one more signature before the quarter closes."
Adrian's hand tightened around the paper.
The third folder contained photographs of documents carrying Valentina's signature.
Several were clearly different from the signature on her passport copy clipped to the front.
A voice behind him said, "You shouldn't be here."
Adrian turned.
Maurice stood in the doorway.
He was no longer pretending to be shocked.
"How did you know where I was?" Adrian asked.
Maurice looked at the open folders.
"Because I know my wife."
"You knew about the locker."
"I knew she had been hiding things from me."
Adrian picked up the voice recorder.
"Like evidence?"
Maurice's eyes followed it.
"You have no idea what you're looking at."
"Then explain it."
Maurice stepped inside.
"Valentina was moving money too."
"Her own foundation money?"
"Our finances are complicated."
"Forgery is not complicated."
Maurice's composure cracked.
"You always hated me."
"I disliked you."
Adrian's voice remained calm.
"Today I am beginning to understand why."
Maurice reached for one of the folders.
Adrian moved it away.
"Don't touch anything."
"Those documents concern my marriage."
"They concern my daughter's money."
Maurice suddenly looked toward the recorder.
"Did you listen to that?"
Again, he reacted too quickly.
Adrian turned the recorder over in his hand.
There was only one saved file.
Its date was from the previous night.
Adrian pressed play.
At first, there was only wind and distant marina noise.
Then Valentina's voice came through, trembling but clear.
"Maurice, I know what you and Camille did."
A man's voice answered.
Maurice's voice.
"Give me the key, Valentina."
Then came Valentina's final sentence before the recording ended.
May you like
"If anything happens to me, my father gets everything."
Maurice went completely still.
