Chapter 11 - Maurice's Other Way.

.The phrase haunted Valentina for the rest of the night.
I have another way.
By morning, Detective Park had an explanation that was disturbing for a different reason than Valentina expected.
Maurice had not been planning physical harm.
He had been planning a legal maneuver.
The Monaco law firm had prepared a marital property agreement granting Maurice temporary authority over certain assets if Valentina was declared medically incapacitated.
The document itself was not automatically valid.
But attached to it was another questionable signature.
Valentina's.
"He wanted control if I couldn't make decisions," she said.
Adrian nodded.
"And your injury gave him the exact circumstance the agreement described."
The irony was almost impossible to process.
Maurice had not created the accident.
But the moment Valentina was hospitalized, the plan he had quietly built became useful.
There was one problem for him.
He had ignored the hospital.
Adrian had arrived first.
And because Adrian had signed the emergency authorization and immediately challenged the forged documents, Maurice never gained practical control.
Valentina stared out the window.
"That is why he was angry you signed."
"Yes."
"Not because you made a medical decision."
"Because I was standing where he expected to stand."
Valentina closed her eyes.
For days she had been trying to decide which betrayal hurt most.
The affair.
The money.
The forged signatures.
The moment Maurice walked away from her on the wet marina pavement.
Now she understood that all of them came from the same place.
He had stopped seeing her as a person.
She had become access.
A signature.
A family name.
A door to money he believed he deserved.
Maurice requested a private meeting through his attorney.
Before Valentina answered, Adrian urged her to refuse.
She expected the old argument between them to return.
Instead, Adrian stopped himself.
"I have spent too much of your life telling you what I think you should do," he said.
"So I will tell you what I am afraid of, and then you decide."
Valentina looked at him with surprise.
He admitted that he feared Maurice would use guilt, nostalgia, and confusion to pull her back into the same pattern.
He also admitted that avoiding Maurice forever would not necessarily make Valentina feel stronger.
"Whatever you choose, I will be outside," Adrian said.
Valentina squeezed his hand.
It was the apology he had never learned how to say directly.
She understood it anyway.
Maurice requested a private meeting through his attorney.
Valentina surprised everyone by agreeing.
Dr. Cole allowed ten minutes with security outside.
Maurice entered carrying no flowers and no dramatic gifts.
He looked exhausted.
For the first time, Valentina thought he looked like the man she had married rather than the charming stranger he had become.
"I'm sorry," he said.
She did not answer.
"I should have called for help."
"Yes."
"I thought you were conscious."
"I was."
Maurice looked confused.
"You remember?"
"I remember calling your name."
He looked down.
"I panicked."
"You protected the party."
"I protected the investors."
"That isn't better."
He flinched.
Valentina leaned back carefully.
"Did you love Camille?"
Maurice was silent.
"That wasn't the question I expected."
"Answer it."
"I don't know."
Valentina nodded slowly.
"Did you love me?"
This time his silence lasted longer.
"Yes."
"When?"
Maurice's eyes filled with tears.
"At the beginning."
Valentina looked toward the window.
"I think that's the first truthful thing you've said."
He stepped closer.
"There are things about Camille you still don't know."
Valentina turned back.
Maurice lowered his voice.
"She didn't come to the marina just for the key."
"Then why?"
"Because she found out I was going to end our arrangement."
Valentina's expression changed.
May you like
Maurice swallowed.
"And because the person who forged your signatures wasn't me."
