Chapter 8 - The Contract Maurice Couldn't Explain.

.Maurice's attorney insisted the financial documents were misunderstandings created by aggressive bookkeeping.
Detective Park did not argue.
She simply requested warrants.
By the following afternoon, investigators had copies of Lucent Charters' bank records, Camille's company accounts, and Maurice's recent communications.
The pattern was ugly.
Money left Valentina's foundation through contracts carrying disputed signatures.
It moved to Voss Maritime Consulting.
Then portions returned to Lucent Charters as investor capital.
Maurice had used the appearance of family wealth to keep the yacht company alive.
When investors asked for proof, documents appeared with Valentina's name.
"He built a company with money that wasn't his," Adrian said.
"Not exactly," Park replied.
"He built the appearance of a company with money he could not legally promise."
The distinction mattered in court.
Emotion did not.
Evidence did.
Valentina asked to see the documents from her locker.
Adrian brought copies to the hospital.
Her hand shook as she turned the pages.
"This one is fake."
She pointed to a loan guarantee.
"So is this."
Another page.
"I never approved this account."
Then she reached a contract dated six weeks earlier.
She went silent.
"What is it?" Adrian asked.
Valentina read the page again.
"This signature is mine."
Adrian frowned.
"You signed it?"
"Yes, but not this document."
She remembered Maurice bringing her a stack of papers at home.
He said they were routine insurance renewals for the foundation gala.
She had signed several marked tabs without reading every page.
"I trusted him."
Adrian looked at the copied contract.
"He substituted pages."
Valentina covered her face.
"I gave him the signature."
"He gave you a lie."
That distinction mattered too.
Later, Maurice sent flowers.
Valentina asked the nurse to remove them.
Then he sent a handwritten note.
Please let me explain before your father destroys everything we built.
Valentina read it twice.
She laughed once, without humor.
"Everything we built."
She handed the note to Detective Park.
Park placed it in an evidence sleeve.
"Do you want to speak with him?"
"No."
"He may continue trying."
"Then keep everything."
That evening, Adrian returned to his hotel and found Maurice waiting in the lobby.
"We need to talk," Maurice said.
"No."
"Valentina could lose everything if you keep pushing this."
Adrian stopped.
"Explain."
Maurice lowered his voice.
"There are investors who do not know the truth yet."
"That sounds like your problem."
"If Lucent collapses, the foundation gets named in every lawsuit."
"Because you used it."
Maurice stepped closer.
"I can fix this."
"You had months to fix it."
"I need forty-eight hours."
"For what?"
Maurice looked around the lobby.
"To unwind the transfers."
Adrian studied him.
"And what do you want in return?"
Maurice hesitated.
Then he said the words Adrian had been waiting to hear.
"The original recorder."
Adrian's expression did not change.
"Why?"
Maurice swallowed.
"Because that recording does not tell the whole story."
"Then tell me the rest."
Maurice looked toward the glass doors.
"If Valentina remembers what happened after the recording stopped, she won't just leave me."
May you like
His voice dropped.
"She'll send someone to prison."
