Chapter 5 - Forty Missing Minutes.

.The marina footage did not show what happened to Valentina.
But it showed enough to destroy Maurice's first story.
Detective Park met Adrian in a small hospital consultation room and placed still images on the table.
At 7:42 p.m., Valentina walked toward Pier Nine alone.
At 7:51, Camille Voss entered the same corridor.
At 8:06, both women appeared near the service gate.
Valentina was holding the torn envelope.
Camille was pointing toward the parking area.
At 8:11, they disappeared beyond the camera's view.
At 8:27, Camille returned alone.
At 8:34, she boarded Lucent.
At 8:46, a maintenance worker found Valentina unconscious near the service road and called emergency services.
Maurice had claimed he had been aboard the yacht since seven.
The footage confirmed that part.
It also showed him checking his phone repeatedly between eight and nine.
"He knew someone was trying to reach him," Detective Park said.
Adrian stared at the photographs.
"Can you arrest them?"
"Not based on this."
"My daughter has evidence of financial crimes."
"Then we need copies."
Adrian nodded.
He had already given the voice recorder and folders to his attorney, who had begun making digital duplicates.
Detective Park asked about the final line on the recording.
If anything happens to me, my father gets everything.
Adrian explained that Valentina's mother's trust gave her control of several family assets at age thirty.
Her thirtieth birthday was six weeks away.
"And if she dies before then?" Park asked.
Adrian looked at her.
"The assets return to the family trust."
"Which you control?"
"Yes."
"If she survives past thirty?"
"They become hers outright."
Detective Park wrote something down.
"Could her husband gain control through marriage?"
"Not directly."
"Through signatures?"
Adrian thought about the forged papers.
"Possibly."
A knock interrupted them.
Maurice stood outside.
"I want to see my wife."
Detective Park introduced herself.
Maurice's expression cooled.
"Do I need a lawyer?"
"That depends on what you want to tell me."
He smiled without humor.
"Then I definitely need one."
He walked away.
Adrian watched him go.
"He did not ask how she was."
"People behave strangely under stress," Park said.
"And guilty people?"
Park closed her notebook.
"Sometimes they behave exactly like frightened people. That is why we follow evidence."
An hour later, Valentina moved her hand.
A nurse called Dr. Cole.
Adrian stood beside the bed as her eyelids fluttered.
She did not fully wake.
But when he said her name, her fingers tightened weakly around his.
"Valentina, it's Dad."
Her lips could not form words around the breathing tube.
Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes.
Adrian leaned closer.
"You are safe."
Her eyes opened for only a second.
She looked terrified.
Then her fingers moved against his palm.
One tap.
Two taps.
Three.
She repeated the pattern.
Adrian frowned.
"What are you trying to tell me?"
Valentina's hand trembled.
Then her finger slowly traced three letters against his skin.
C.
A.
M.
Adrian's blood ran cold.
He bent closer.
"Camille?"
Valentina's eyes opened wider.
May you like
A tear slid toward her ear.
Then every monitor beside the bed began sounding at once.
