Chapter 2 - The Envelope in Her Coat.

.Maurice reached the marina before the yacht party had fully ended.
He had left Camille standing under the gold deck lights without an explanation.
By the time he entered St. Catherine, his shirt was buttoned incorrectly and his hair was damp from the mist coming off the harbor.
Adrian was waiting beside the elevator.
"How is she?" Maurice demanded.
"In surgery."
"Why did you sign anything without me?"
Adrian looked at him for a long moment.
"Because you were drinking champagne while your wife was unconscious."
Maurice's face tightened.
"You don't know what you saw."
"I know where you were."
"It was a business celebration."
"At midnight. On a yacht. With Camille Voss."
Maurice looked toward the nurses' station.
"Keep your voice down."
Adrian almost smiled.
"Now you care who hears?"
Dr. Cole emerged from the restricted corridor before Maurice could respond.
The operation had gone as well as they could expect, he explained, but Valentina remained in serious condition.
The next twenty-four hours would matter.
Maurice asked to see her.
Dr. Cole shook his head.
"Not yet."
Maurice turned to Adrian.
"Give me her things."
Adrian did not move.
"Why?"
"Because I am her husband."
"That did not seem important an hour ago."
Maurice's eyes dropped to the clear property bag on the chair beside Adrian.
Inside was Valentina's cracked phone.
The torn envelope was gone.
So was the brass key.
Maurice noticed immediately.
"Where is the envelope?"
Adrian's gaze sharpened.
"Interesting question."
"You said she had something for me."
"I said she was carrying something."
Maurice took a step closer.
"Adrian, this is not the time for games."
"I agree."
Adrian slipped one hand into the inside pocket of his black jacket.
"So tell me why my daughter called you twelve minutes before she was found."
Maurice glanced away.
"She probably wanted to argue."
"About what?"
"Our marriage."
"What about it?"
Maurice exhaled sharply.
"She had become suspicious of everything."
Adrian's voice became quieter.
"Everything including Camille?"
Maurice did not answer.
That silence was enough.
A nurse approached with Valentina's phone charger and mentioned that police had asked whether the family wanted an officer to collect the damaged phone.
Maurice reacted too quickly.
"No."
The nurse paused.
Maurice softened his tone.
"I mean, there is no need. It was an accident."
Adrian stared at him.
"What accident?"
Maurice blinked.
"The marina accident."
"No one told you how she was found."
The hallway seemed to become silent around them.
Maurice recovered quickly.
"You said she collapsed near the service road."
"I did not say accident."
Maurice's jaw tightened.
Adrian reached into his jacket and removed the torn envelope.
"I opened this while you were driving here."
Maurice's eyes fixed on it.
Inside was a single photocopied page from a bank document.
At the bottom were two signatures.
Valentina's was one of them.
The other appeared to be Maurice's.
But beside the signatures was a handwritten note from Valentina.
I never signed this.
Adrian watched Maurice read the words.
Then he placed the brass key in his palm.
"And this," Adrian said, "belongs to a private storage locker at the marina."
Maurice's face changed.
Not grief.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Adrian closed his fist around the key.
"What did Valentina discover?"
Maurice looked toward the intensive care doors.
For the first time, he did not ask whether his wife would wake up.
May you like
He asked something else.
"Did she tell anyone what was in that locker?"
