Chapter 7 - The Man Who Stayed on Camera.

.Valentina's words made no sense until Detective Park reviewed the yacht footage again.
Maurice appeared in several recordings during the critical hour.
But most of them were distant angles.
The clearest image showed him entering the main salon at 7:58 p.m.
The next clear image did not appear until 8:39.
Between those times, only his phone could be identified.
It sat on the outdoor bar beside a half-full glass.
At 8:12, a man wearing a white shirt crossed the upper deck with his back to the camera.
The first time Park watched the footage, she assumed it was Maurice.
The second time, she noticed the man was wearing dark trousers.
Maurice had arrived in pale linen pants.
"Who is he?" Adrian asked.
Park enlarged the image.
"We are working on that."
Valentina remembered more in fragments.
She had gone to the marina because Maurice texted her asking to meet privately.
He claimed he wanted to explain the foundation transfers.
When she arrived, Maurice was not at Pier Nine.
Camille was.
"She said Maurice was tired of being treated like a guest in my life," Valentina told Adrian.
"She said the money should have been ours anyway."
"Ours?"
Valentina nodded.
"Hers and Maurice's."
The affair was no longer a suspicion.
Valentina had discovered hotel receipts, private messages, and plans for a summer house in Corsica.
But the betrayal was not what had frightened her most.
"They were using my foundation as collateral," she whispered.
Adrian's expression hardened.
"For what?"
"A yacht company."
Lucent Charters.
Maurice had been telling investors he controlled assets he did not own.
If the scheme collapsed, Valentina's foundation could lose millions.
"I confronted him two weeks ago," she said.
"He promised everything would be fixed."
"And you believed him?"
Valentina looked ashamed.
Adrian squeezed her hand.
"I am not asking to judge you."
She looked back at him.
"I wanted my marriage to be real."
Outside the room, Maurice waited with an attorney named Daniel Frost.
Frost demanded access to Valentina.
Dr. Cole refused.
"My patient has specifically asked not to see Mr. Laurent."
Maurice's face flushed.
"She is confused."
"She is competent to make that request."
"She has a brain injury."
Dr. Cole's expression became cold.
"Do not use her condition to erase her choices."
Maurice's lawyer pulled him away.
That evening, Detective Park received a call from marina security.
They had identified the black SUV Valentina remembered.
It belonged to Lucent Charters.
The company leased it for executive transportation.
The driver log listed Maurice Laurent as the authorized user that night.
But another name appeared beneath his.
Julian Voss.
Camille's older brother.
Adrian frowned.
"Who is Julian Voss?"
Park turned her tablet toward him.
A corporate photograph showed a broad-shouldered man in a white shirt and dark trousers.
The same clothes worn by the unidentified figure on the yacht camera.
Then Park revealed the part that changed everything.
Julian's access badge had opened the yacht's service gate at 8:03 p.m.

And again at 8:36.
He had disappeared from the yacht during almost the exact same forty minutes as Camille.
