Chapter 12 - Camille's Ledger.

.Valentina did not believe Maurice immediately.

She had learned what belief without evidence could cost.

"Who forged them?" she asked.

Maurice looked toward the door.

"Camille."

Valentina almost laughed.

"Convenient."

"I knew she was moving money. I knew she was using documents you had signed for other purposes. But I didn't know about every forged signature."

"You benefited from them."

"Yes."

"You lied for her."

"Yes."

"You left me on the ground because the two of you were trying to hide it."

Maurice's face collapsed.

"Yes."

Valentina stared at him.

"Then whether you held the pen hardly matters to me."

But it mattered to investigators.

Detective Park obtained a search warrant for Camille's office.

Inside a locked cabinet, officers found a handwritten ledger matching many of the foundation transfers.

Beside dates and amounts were initials.

M.L.

C.V.

J.V.

And one unfamiliar set.

D.F.

Maurice's attorney was Daniel Frost.

The discovery changed the case again.

Frost immediately withdrew as Maurice's counsel and hired his own attorney.

Investigators uncovered emails suggesting Frost had prepared shell-company paperwork while deliberately avoiding questions about the source of funds.

Whether he knew signatures were forged remained under investigation.

Camille's position became more fragile.

She asked for a meeting with prosecutors.

In exchange for consideration, she offered the complete financial structure and messages Maurice had deleted from his phone.

Her attorney insisted she had not intended Valentina to be harmed.

According to Camille, she went to the marina to persuade Valentina to delay reporting the transfers for forty-eight hours.

When Valentina refused, the argument escalated.

Then Valentina fell while backing away from approaching headlights.

Camille claimed she wanted to call an ambulance.

Maurice stopped her.

That part matched Valentina's memory.

But Camille added something Valentina had not heard.

Maurice had said, "If police come here tonight, everything is over."

Camille obeyed.

For nineteen minutes, three adults chose their financial scheme over a woman lying injured nearby.

A maintenance worker finally did what none of them had done.

He called for help.

That detail spread beyond the investigation after Thomas Reed's name appeared in a local report about the emergency response.

Thomas refused interviews.

When Adrian quietly offered to compensate him, Thomas declined that too.

"I called an ambulance, Mr. Moretti," he said over the phone.

"Anybody should have done the same."

Adrian had no answer to that.

The sentence was painfully simple.

Anybody should have done the same.

Maurice had wealth, education, influence, and every reason to understand the seriousness of the moment.

Thomas had a toolbox, a reflective work vest, and no connection to Valentina at all.

Yet only one of them had acted as though her life mattered more than inconvenience.

Valentina later asked Adrian to write Thomas's name down.

"I don't want to forget the person who stayed," she said.

Valentina listened to Detective Park explain the statement.

Then she asked one question.

"Why did Camille bring Julian?"

Park opened another page.

"To collect the documents."

"And the SUV?"

"They planned to drive you home after convincing you to stay quiet."

"So nobody planned the fall."

"Based on what we know, no."

Valentina breathed out slowly.

The truth was less cinematic than a conspiracy.

It was also more painful.

No one had plotted her injury.

They had simply cared so little about her safety once it happened that they gambled with her life to protect themselves.

Adrian sat beside her after the detective left.

"There is one more thing," he said.

He handed Valentina a sealed letter recovered from Camille's office.

It was addressed to Maurice.

The date was three months earlier.

Valentina opened it.

Halfway down the page, she stopped reading.

Camille had written:

When Valentina turns thirty, you leave her, and we take Lucent public together.

Valentina looked at her father.

"He was going to leave me after he got control."

Adrian said nothing.

Valentina folded the letter carefully.

May you like

Then she reached for her phone.

"Call my attorney."
