Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Badge

The fluorescent lights of Oakridge Academy buzzed with an irritating hum.

Sarah adjusted the heavy collar of her grey wool coat.

She held her ten-year-old daughter's uninjured right hand tightly.

Lily kept her gaze glued to the polished linoleum floor.

A stiff purple sling cradled the little girl's fractured left arm.

A fresh, dark bruise marred the side of her pale cheek.

Every step toward the principal's office felt heavier than the last.

Sarah took a deep, steadying breath to mask the boiling rage inside her chest.

She pushed open the heavy oak door without knocking.

The tense atmosphere inside the room was immediately suffocating.

Principal Evans sat behind her large mahogany desk with a nervous, rigid posture.

To the right sat a wealthy-looking man in a sharply tailored navy blue suit.

His name was Richard, and he lounged in the leather guest chair with absolute arrogance.

Standing right beside him was his son, Leo.

Leo wore a pristine school uniform blazer and a deeply entitled smirk.

He did not look like a ten-year-old boy who had just sent a classmate to the hospital.

He looked entirely bored by the inconvenience of the meeting.

Sarah guided Lily to a small chair in the corner of the room.

She gently squeezed her daughter's shoulder to offer a silent promise of safety.

Then, Sarah turned around and marched straight toward the center of the room.

She stopped only a few feet away from the smirking boy.

Her eyes were locked onto Leo with a cold, piercing intensity.

"Did you push my daughter down the stairs?" she asked.

The principal nervously cleared her throat.

"Now, let us try to handle this calmly," Principal Evans pleaded softly.

Leo ignored the principal entirely and tilted his chin up at Sarah.

"My dad pays for this school," the boy stated proudly.

He crossed his arms over his chest like a miniature king.

"I make the rules here," Leo added with a cruel little smile.

Sarah did not blink, nor did she raise her voice.

"I asked you a direct question," Sarah said quietly.

Leo let out a dramatic, exaggerated sigh.

"Yes," the boy answered without a single ounce of remorse.

He leaned back slightly against his father’s expensive leather chair.

"And you can't do anything about it," Leo finished confidently.

Richard finally shifted in his seat and let out a low chuckle.

He looked Sarah up and down with obvious disdain.

He clearly saw nothing but an ordinary, working-class mother in a plain grey coat.

"You heard the boy," Richard said in a smooth, condescending tone.

He casually tapped an expensive gold pen against the wooden desk.

"Boys will be boys, and accidents happen," he continued dismissively.

Sarah’s expression hardened into a mask of pure stone.

"Assaulting a little girl is not an accident," Sarah corrected him sharply.

Richard rolled his eyes and sighed heavily.

"Call the police if it makes you feel better," Richard mocked her.

He leaned forward, dropping his voice into a menacing whisper.

"I buy everyone in this city," Richard sneered.

He smiled like a man who had never faced a consequence in his entire life.

Principal Evans looked away, seemingly ashamed but too terrified to intervene.

The room fell into a suffocating, heavy silence.

Sarah did not scream, cry, or throw a tantrum.

Instead, she simply maintained eye contact with the arrogant billionaire.

Her right hand slipped smoothly into the inner pocket of her wool coat.

"I don't need to call the local police," Sarah stated evenly.

She pulled out a small, worn black leather flip-wallet.

With a swift and practiced flick of her wrist, she flipped the wallet open.

A heavy, gleaming gold Federal Agent shield caught the harsh overhead light.

The arrogant smirk vanished from Richard's face in an instant.

All the blood quickly drained from his cheeks.

Principal Evans gasped loudly and covered her mouth with both hands.

May you like

Even the arrogant little boy stepped back, suddenly realizing the gravity of the room.

Sarah held the badge steady, letting the silence crush the men before her.
