Chapter 2 - The Illusion Crumbles

The heavy gold shield seemed to drain all the oxygen from the room.

Richard stared at the federal badge in absolute disbelief.

His expensive gold pen slipped awkwardly from his fingers.

It clattered loudly against the polished mahogany desk.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation," Sarah read aloud from her credentials.

Her voice was calm but possessed an undeniable edge of steel.

"Special Agent Sarah Hayes," she continued, stating her name for the official record.

Richard swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing visibly.

"Now, listen here, Agent," Richard stammered, raising his hands in a defensive gesture.

"This is just a massive misunderstanding between children," he tried to backtrack.

Sarah snapped the leather wallet shut with a sharp, resonant thud.

"There is no misunderstanding," she replied coldly.

"Your son just confessed to assault in front of three witnesses."

Leo looked up at his father, his previous arrogance entirely gone.

"Dad, what does she mean?" the young boy asked, his voice trembling.

Richard ignored his son, panic now sweating through his custom suit.

"I am sure we can settle this privately," Richard whispered desperately.

He reached into his jacket pocket, hinting at his checkbook.

"Name a charity, or perhaps a college fund for your beautiful daughter," he offered.

Sarah did not even blink at the pathetic attempt at bribery.

"Attempting to bribe a federal officer will add five years to your sentence," she warned him.

Richard froze completely, his hand still trapped inside his expensive jacket.

Principal Evans trembled as she finally found her voice.

"Agent Hayes, I had no idea," the principal pleaded helplessly.

"I am bound by the school board's funding," she tried to excuse herself.

Sarah turned her fierce gaze toward the principal.

"You are bound by the law to protect the children in your care," Sarah corrected her firmly.

"You failed to do that today," she added with deep disappointment.

Sarah turned her back on the adults and walked over to her daughter.

She knelt gracefully in front of Lily’s chair.

The little girl looked up with wide, tear-filled eyes.

"Are we safe now, Mommy?" Lily whispered softly.

Sarah gently brushed a strand of hair away from her daughter’s bruised cheek.

"Yes, sweetheart," Sarah promised with a warm, maternal smile.

"No one is going to hurt you ever again," she assured her.

She stood back up and pulled a sleek black phone from her coat.

"I am calling the local precinct right now," Sarah announced to the room.

"Your money cannot buy the federal government," she told Richard directly.

Richard slumped back into his chair, utterly defeated.

The untouchable billionaire had finally met a wall of absolute justice.
