Chapter 3 - Consequences and Comfort

The flashing blue and red lights quickly illuminated the school courtyard.
Two uniformed police officers stepped confidently into the principal's office.
They immediately recognized Sarah and offered a respectful nod.
"Agent Hayes, we received your call," the taller officer stated professionally.
Sarah nodded back and gestured toward Richard.
"This man attempted to bribe a federal agent to cover up an assault," she reported clearly.
Richard jumped out of his chair in a frantic panic.
"That is an absolute lie!" he shouted, his voice cracking under the pressure.
"I was simply offering restitution for the medical bills," he lied through his teeth.
Sarah did not even bother to argue with the desperate man.
"Principal Evans, I assume this office has security cameras?" Sarah asked sharply.
The principal flinched and pointed a shaky finger toward the corner of the ceiling.
"Yes, audio and video are recorded for safety protocols," Principal Evans admitted quietly.
Richard’s face turned an unhealthy shade of pale white.
He realized instantly that his attempt at bribery was perfectly captured on tape.
"Sir, I need you to turn around and place your hands behind your back," the officer instructed.
Richard slowly complied, his shoulders slumped in total humiliation.
The cold metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the silent room.
Leo watched in pure horror as his untouchable father was arrested.
Tears streamed down the bully's face as the reality of his actions finally hit him.
"I am sorry!" Leo cried out, looking desperately toward Lily.
"I shouldn't have pushed you," he sobbed uncontrollably.
Sarah looked at the boy, feeling a brief flash of maternal pity.
"Apologies do not erase the damage you caused, Leo," Sarah told him gently but firmly.
"But they are the first step toward becoming a better person than your father," she added.
A child protective services worker arrived moments later to escort Leo home safely.
The room slowly emptied until only Sarah, Lily, and the principal remained.
Principal Evans sat behind her desk, looking deeply ashamed of her cowardice.
"I will submit my resignation in the morning," the principal whispered.
"Make sure it is on the board's desk by eight," Sarah replied without an ounce of sympathy.
She helped Lily stand up and carefully adjusted the little girl's coat.

They walked out of the office and into the cool afternoon air.
The heavy burden of fear had completely vanished from Lily's shoulders.
"You were really brave today, Mommy," Lily said with a bright, small smile.

Sarah held her daughter's uninjured hand tightly as they walked to the car.
"So were you, my brave girl," Sarah whispered back.
