Chapter 4 - A Safe Haven

The drive home was wonderfully quiet and peaceful.
Sarah parked her modest sedan in the driveway of their cozy suburban home.
She walked around the car and helped Lily unbuckle her seatbelt with gentle care.
Inside the house, the familiar smell of lavender and warm vanilla immediately soothed their frayed nerves.
Sarah guided Lily to the comfortable living room couch.
She carefully propped a soft pillow under her daughter's injured arm.
"Are you hungry, sweetie?" Sarah asked warmly.
Lily nodded slowly, a tiny spark of light returning to her hazel eyes.
"Can we have macaroni and cheese?" the little girl requested softly.
Sarah smiled and headed straight for the kitchen.
She boiled the water, her mind silently replaying the tense events of the afternoon.
For years, she had fought dangerous cartels and violent criminals as a federal undercover agent.
Yet, nothing had terrified her more than seeing her own child hurt by a careless bully.
She stirred the cheese sauce with a renewed sense of purpose.
Justice was not just about locking up mobsters in federal prison.
It was about protecting the innocent and vulnerable in everyday life.
Sarah brought two steaming bowls of pasta to the wooden coffee table.
They ate together while watching a lighthearted, colorful cartoon on the television.
The dark purple bruise on Lily's cheek still made Sarah's heart ache slightly.
But the genuine, bright laugh escaping her daughter's lips was a profound victory.
