Chapter 7 - A Mother's Duty
Downtown, the federal field office buzzed with relentless afternoon activity.
Sarah sat at her cluttered metal desk, reviewing a thick stack of legal documents.
The federal indictment for Richard Sterling rested right at the top of the pile.
His charges included attempted bribery of a federal officer and gross obstruction of justice.
His highly paid lawyers had tried absolutely everything to negotiate a quiet plea deal.
The United States Attorney’s Office had firmly rejected every single offer.
Special Agent Mark Jenkins walked over and dropped a fresh cup of coffee on her desk.
"Sterling's legal team is officially panicking," Mark said with a highly satisfied grin.
"They never expected a seasoned undercover agent to be sitting in a middle school office."
Sarah took a sip of the warm, bitter coffee and sighed contentedly.
"He thought wealth was an invisible shield against any real consequence," she noted sharply.
"He forgot that nobody is above the law when innocent children are involved."
Mark nodded respectfully, admiring his partner's unwavering moral compass.
"You did excellent work closing this out, Sarah," he praised her sincerely.
"How is your brave little girl holding up these days?" he asked kindly.
Sarah smiled, the tough exterior of the federal agent melting into the deep warmth of a mother.
"She is thriving, stronger and far more confident than ever before," she answered proudly.
She signed the final transfer order, officially sending Richard’s file to the federal prosecutors.
